About IPSD
Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar's company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future.
Job Summary
IPSD has an exciting opportunity for a driven and analytical Manufacturing Engineer to support the C15 Diesel Engine Mainline Assembly Engineering Team. In this role, you will lead technical analysis and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes, driving efficiency, cost performance, and product quality across post-assembly operations. You will collaborate cross-functionally to ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental requirements, and regulatory guidelines. This position offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on operational excellence and the delivery of high-performance diesel engines.
What you will do:
  • Identify and implement improvements to assembly equipment and processes to increase throughput, reduce downtime, and improve overall line performance
  • Monitor production equipment and processes, diagnose issues, and lead troubleshooting efforts to restore and maintain reliability
  • Provide hands-on engineering support for the installation, startup, maintenance, and optimization of assembly equipment and production lines
  • Design and develop tooling, fixtures, and lifting devices to improve operator safety, reduce risk, and ensure consistent product quality
  • Conduct and maintain SFMEA and PFMEA to identify risks, drive preventive actions, and ensure process robustness
  • Perform ergonomic assessments and implement improvements to reduce operator strain and enhance workplace safety
  • Investigate and resolve internal and external quality defects in diesel engine assembly, using root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Implement and sustain in-process validation (IPV) methods to ensure correct parts and components are installed per engineering specifications
  • Analyze and optimize assembly operations through time studies, workstation layout changes, and material flow improvements
  • Lead capital and continuous improvement projects focused on reducing scrap, lowering costs, and improving part utilization
  • Coach and support production and technical teams to strengthen problem-solving capabilities and drive operational excellence

What you will have:
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment
  • Engineering - MFG: Knowledge of processes, techniques and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention
  • Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process
  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations

  • 3D Modeling & Design: Knowledge of 3D modeling tools and design principles; ability to create, modify, and interpret models to support manufacturing processes and improvements
  • Root Cause Analysis: Knowledge of investigative methods and tools; ability to identify, analyze, and resolve underlying causes of manufacturing and process issues
  • Controlled Torque Tooling: Knowledge of Atlas Copco and similar controlled torque systems; ability to apply, maintain, and troubleshoot tooling used in assembly operations
  • Time Management: Knowledge of prioritization and planning techniques; ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaboration: Knowledge of team dynamics and cross-functional engagement; ability to work effectively with diverse teams to achieve shared manufacturing goals

  • This role requires 5-days onsite presence and weekend/alternative shift work as needed.
