What Does a Cash Controller Do?

A cash controller is responsible for tracking accounting systems and handling financial activities for a company. Their primary responsibilities are keeping records of incoming and outgoing cash, processing day-to-day transactions, maintaining records, producing periodic financial account reports, and enforcing the budget. A cash controller must stay up to date on current accounting software, have computer skills, and understand cash control systems and procedures. Qualifications to become a cash controller include a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.

What are cash controllers?

Cash controllers are financial professionals responsible for managing and overseeing an organization's cash flow, including the receipt, handling, and disbursement of cash. They ensure that cash transactions are accurately recorded and that internal controls are followed to prevent theft or loss. Their duties often include cash forecasting, bank reconciliations, and preparing financial reports related to cash management. Cash controllers play a crucial role in maintaining liquidity and supporting the financial stability of a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cash Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cash Controller, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in finance or accounting, often supported by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with financial management software, cash handling systems, and sometimes certifications like CPA or CIMA are commonly required. Integrity, reliability, and effective communication are standout soft skills for ensuring accuracy and building trust in financial operations. These skills and qualifications are essential to maintain precise financial records, prevent errors or fraud, and support the organization's financial stability.

Job description

Job Description We are looking for a high-impact Controller to own the numbers and drive fiscal clarity. You aren't just a "bookkeeper plus"-you are a strategic partner who lives and breathes QuickBooks, ensuring our financial engine runs with high-octane precision. As the lead architect of our ledger, you'll turn raw data into the "clout" we need to scale.

Key Responsibilities QuickBooks Mastery: Full ownership of the QuickBooks ecosystem, including chart of accounts optimization, class/project tracking, and app integrations (e.g., Bill.com, Expensify, or Gusto). Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) with deep-dive analysis. Internal Controls: Establish and maintain robust accounting policies to safeguard assets and ensure "audit-ready" status at all times

Cash Flow Management: Monitor daily cash positions and provide forward-looking projections to support leadership decisions. Compliance & Tax: Manage all tax filings (Sales Tax, 1099s, etc.) and coordinate with external CPA firms for year-end tax prep. Process Automation: Identify inefficiencies in the current workflow and implement QuickBooks-native solutions to automate manual tasks

Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA preferred). Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role. QB Expert Status: Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks (Online or Desktop) is non-negotiable.

You should know the shortcuts, the workarounds, and the reporting quirks. Tech Savvy: High proficiency in Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, Data Modeling) and modern FinTech stacks.
