Job description

The Stress Lab Nurse reports to the Supervisor of the Device Clinic /Cardiac Stress and is responsible for representing Augusta Health to the cardiac patient in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Provides nursing care by assessing the patient pre-procedure, performing diagnostic stress testing with and without medications.  Examples include, but are not limited to, exercise stress testing, nuclear stress testing, stress echoes, Dobutamine stress tests and other procedures as required.  May administer prescribed medication or pharmacological agents during and post cardiac testing, as well as emergency medications during critical patient care episodes, per provider order. Stress Lab nurses also schedule patients and follow established guidelines for Cardiac monitor application.
The scope of practice for the Stress Lab Nurse includes care of patients undergoing multiple types of stress testing where the safety and wellbeing of the patient can be insured through a supportive clinical environment that contains appropriate monitoring capabilities and the availability of trained health care professionals & equipment to address complications.  The Stress Lab Nurse will triage patients into the appropriate testing category based upon the physician’s order.  The Stress Lab Nurse will initiate and monitor the appropriate exercise protocol, the operation of the exercise equipment, all while monitoring the condition and vital signs of the patient before, during, and after the stress test.  Specific duties will include, but are not limited to, reviewing physician orders, taking vital signs obtaining EKGs, operating the exercise equipment, monitoring vital signs to include EKG rhythms, identifying rhythm changes, documenting findings, communicating test results to the cardiologist, and implementing emergency measures during critical patient care episodes.
Qualifications:
  • Nursing Diploma and/or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Current and valid Registered nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or from a state that is part of a Compact agreement with Virginia.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • ACLS within 3 months of employment.
  • Cardiac experience and cardiac rhythm interpretation required, one year.

Preferred:
  • BSN, MSN
  • Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification (CV-BC)
  • Prior stress lab experience, Progressive or Critical Care experience
