Job Title: Charge Capture Specialist

Department: Neurosurgery Outpatient Billing

Entity: Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP)

Location: Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine - 3400 Civic Center Blvd

Hours: M-F, 8-4:30 with flexibility in hours based on operational need

Summary:

  • The Charge Capture Specialist reports to the Supervisor of Billing; this individual performs all pre-claim submission activities, including verifying existing information is accurate, determining when additional data is needed, and collecting necessary details are complete. This position will ensure timely and accurate entry of codes and modifiers as well as stay abreast of system or coding changes related to charge entry and charge review. This positions supports billing activities by working charge review work queue to ensure that claims are clean and should be paid promptly by insurers without requiring additional information.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and audits charge tickets to identify missed charges and/or inaccuracies before entering charges int the system.

  • Ensures charge entry, routinely works charge review work queues and performs charge reconciliation.

  • Communicates effectively with physicians abut identified issues in order to resolve them.

  • Maintains knowledge of current coding and medical billing processes, as well as relevant industry regulations.

  • Participates in and assists with audits to capture lost charges and determine the accuracy of billing as necessary.

  • Performs manual charge entry by gathering demographic, insurance, and healthcare encounter information from a variety of sources in order to accurately bill medical claims.

  • Ensures information entered in the system is done in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Verifying charges on accounts as needed and providing detailed and accurate comments for future reference.

  • Responds to inquiries from various internal departments and external clients in a timely and accurate professional manner.

  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

  • And Previous experience in Medical Billing or Charge Entry
