To thrive as a Captioning Assistant, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and a strong command of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, often with a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum qualification. Familiarity with captioning software and transcription platforms is important, and experience with real-time captioning tools or certification in transcription can be advantageous. These competencies are crucial to ensure captions are produced quickly, accurately, and in accordance with client or regulatory standards.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Captioning Assistant?

Collaboration with team members, such as lead captioners or project managers, is common to ensure timely project completion and adherence to client requirements. Staying adaptable in handling multiple projects and meeting strict deadlines is a key part of the job. This role is vital in making audio and video content accessible to wider audiences, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Yes, captioning assistants can get paid for providing closed captioning services, often working as freelancers or employees for media companies, transcription services, or captioning platforms. Payment varies based on factors such as experience, project complexity, and the platform used, and may involve per-minute or hourly rates.
