Business Intelligence (BI) Developer
Canal Insurance Company is seeking a highly skilled Business Intelligence (BI) Developer to design, develop, and deliver enterprise-grade reporting, dashboards, and analytical solutions. This role leverages Power BI and IBM Cognos Analytics to provide actionable insights across Claims, Underwriting, Agency, Finance, and Operations.
The ideal candidate brings a strong combination of insurance domain expertise, technical BI proficiency, and the ability to translate complex business requirements into scalable, governed data and visualization solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Data & Guidewire Integration
  • Design and develop reporting solutions leveraging data from Policy, Claims, Billing, Agency Management systems, and third-party data sourcesparty data sources
  • Build reusable semantic and data models to support enterprise analytics
  • Collaborate closely with business stakeholders and Data Engineering teams on ETL/ELT processes and curated data layer integration

BI & Visualization Development
  • Develop interactive dashboards and reports using:
    • Power BI
    • IBM Cognos Analytics
  • Build executive level dashboards (Senior Leadership Team ready views, SLTready views)
  • Develop operational dashboards across the enterprise
  • Implement row level security (RLS) and role based accesslevel security (RLS) and rolebased access
  • Translate business KPIs into structured, reusable data models
  • Partner with Claims, Underwriting, and Finance stakeholders to refine and standardize metrics
  • Design and deliver cloudbased BI solutions on Azure, leveraging Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL, and Power BI to enable scalable, secure analytics.
  • Build and optimize semantic models and dashboards using Power BI, integrating data from Azure platforms with strong performance, governance, and cost efficiency.

Data Modeling & Architecture
  • Design and implement star schemas for reporting and analytics
  • Develop advanced DAX calculations and measures in Power BI
  • Optimize report performance through query tuning and aggregation strategies
  • Ensure data lineage, governance, and metric consistency
  • Support Medallion architecture (Raw โ†’ Silver โ†’ Gold)
  • Leverage Copilot and other LLM tools to enable self service analytics and reportingservice analytics and reporting

Governance & Quality
  • Perform data validation and reconciliation against source systems
  • Implement and support data quality checks
  • Support audit and regulatory reporting requirements
  • Document data definitions, transformations, and business logic

Required Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
  • 5+ years of experience in BI / Data Analytics development
  • 3+ years working with insurance products
  • Strong hands on experience with: on experience with:
  • Power BI (DAX, Power Query, data modeling)
  • IBM Cognos Analytics
  • Strong SQL skills (complex joins, window functions, performance tuning)
  • Experience with Azure, Data Lake, and SQL Server preferred
  • Experience working with large insurance datasets

Insurance Domain Knowledge:
  • Strong understanding of:
    • P&C insurance operations
    • Claims lifecycle and reserving concepts
    • Underwriting workflows
    • Agency hierarchy
    • Premium and billing structures
  • Ability to interpret insurance KPIs and regulatory metrics

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Guidewire DataHub / InfoCenter
  • Experience with ETL tools such as ADF, SSIS, Informatica, or similar
  • Experience supporting AMS or modernization programs
  • Familiarity with Data Governance and MDM concepts
  • Experience supporting Digital / Transformation initiatives
