Job description

Frederick Flying Cows - Professional Basketball Organization
Business Development Manager
(Frederick, Maryland)
  • Start Date: September 2026
  • How To Apply: Submit a resume, brief introduction of yourself, and examples of relevant work
  • Full Time Position
  • Candidates MUST reside in or commute daily to Frederick, Maryland

The Role:
The Frederick Flying Cows are seeking a motivated, outgoing, and entrepreneurial Business Development Manager to help drive revenue and continue growing one of Frederick's most unique sports and entertainment brands.
This position will play a major role in the organization's revenue generation efforts, with a primary focus on corporate sponsorship sales, group ticket sales, business development, and relationship management.
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for identifying new prospects, building relationships throughout the Frederick business community, developing creative partnership opportunities, and turning those relationships into long-term revenue for the Flying Cows.
This is a sales position! The ideal candidate will be comfortable picking up the phone, sending cold emails, attending networking events, walking into local businesses, meeting with decision-makers, developing proposals, closing deals, and then ensuring our partners receive an outstanding experience after the sale.
The Flying Cows not strictly a basketball organization - we are an event and entertainment asset to the Frederick community. In addition to our professional basketball season, the organization operates events and initiatives throughout the year including youth camps and clinics, Cowfest, golf events, high school basketball events, community appearances, and more.
Because we operate with a small and highly involved staff, this individual will also have the opportunity to work across many areas of the organization and gain hands-on experience in professional sports. This is a unique opportunity for someone who wants to build a career in sports sales, sponsorship, business development, and revenue generation while having a direct impact on the growth of a young professional sports franchise.
THIS IS AN IN-PERSON OPPORTUNITY! Candidates must be prepared to live in, relocate to, or commute daily to Frederick, MD. Preference is given to City of Frederick residents.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate Partnerships & Sponsorship Sales
  • Identify, prospect, and pursue new corporate partnership opportunities throughout Frederick County and the surrounding region.
  • Develop relationships with local businesses, corporations, organizations, and community leaders.
  • Conduct outbound sales efforts through phone calls, emails, networking, referrals, meetings, and in-person prospecting.
  • Develop customized sponsorship packages based on the goals and needs of prospective partners.
  • Lead sponsorship sales presentations and meetings with prospective partners.
  • Negotiate and close corporate partnership agreements.
  • Maintain an organized sales pipeline and consistently follow up with prospects.
  • Work toward established individual and organizational sponsorship revenue goals.
  • Identify creative new revenue opportunities for the Flying Cows beyond traditional sponsorship inventory.
  • Pursue mutually beneficial trade partnerships that can reduce organizational expenses.

Group Ticket Sales
  • Develop and execute group ticket sales campaigns for Flying Cows home games and special events.
  • Prospect local businesses, schools, youth sports organizations, nonprofits, community groups, and other organizations.
  • Build relationships with group leaders and create experiences that encourage repeat attendance.
  • Sell and coordinate group outings, hospitality opportunities, suites, special experiences, and other ticket packages.
  • Manage group sales logistics including communication, invoicing, ticket distribution, and game-day experiences.

Partner Management & Activation
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing Flying Cows corporate partners.
  • Help ensure sponsorship contracts and promised deliverables are properly executed.
  • Maintain organized records of sponsorship agreements, invoices, activation requirements, and fulfillment.
  • Work alongside the marketing and operations teams to execute partner promotions and activations.
  • Identify opportunities to renew and grow existing partnerships.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to sponsors, clients, fans, and community partners.

Community & Relationship Development
  • Attend networking events, Chamber events, community functions, and other gatherings to represent the Flying Cows and develop new business relationships.
  • Execute and attend community appearances and promotional events.
  • Build relationships with local business leaders and organizations throughout Frederick County.
  • Help grow awareness of the Flying Cows brand throughout the community.
  • Assist with inviting and hosting local leaders, public figures, prospective partners, and other VIP guests at Flying Cows games and events.

Organizational & Game-Day Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the General Manager and Business Operations Manager on the day-to-day operation of the organization.
  • Assist with game-day entertainment, sponsorship activation, sales initiatives, and overall event operations.
  • Help manage and develop sales interns and other seasonal staff.
  • Support Flying Cows events, camps, clinics, and other year-round initiatives.
  • Embrace and embody a "whimsical" mindset - bringing creativity and bold thinking to continue the Flying Cows' reputation as a unique and engaging sports organization.
  • Be willing to assist across departments when necessary as part of a small professional sports organization.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the General Manager and Ownership.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone who is competitive, personable, persistent, organized, and motivated by results.
The right candidate does not necessarily need years of professional sports experience. We are more interested in finding someone who is hungry to learn, be trained, build relationships, comfortable selling, willing to learn, and excited about helping grow a business. You should be comfortable hearing "no," following up repeatedly, starting conversations with people you don't know, and creating opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to you.
This is a prime opportunity for an early-career professional who wants significant responsibility and hands-on experience in the business side of professional sports.
Compensation Structure: Base Salary ($32,000.00 Year 1) + Uncapped Commission
  • Commissions to include sponsorship and group ticket sales generated
  • Compensation structure to be determined prior to start date

This role is an expected 2 year/season commitment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management, Business, Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
  • History of sales, ticket sales, business development, customer service, community relations, or sports industry experience.
  • Internship or job experience in professional or collegiate sports.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Comfortable with outbound prospecting, including cold calling and cold emailing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to confidently present ideas and proposals to business owners and decision-makers.

  • Comfortable working toward measurable sales and revenue goals.
  • Willingness to attend networking and community events.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Comfortable working evenings, weekends, and unconventional hours during the basketball season and major events.

  • Passion for sports, entertainment, sales, and community engagement.
