A Day in the Life of a Development Manager

As a Development Manager, your day may include meeting with donors, collaborating on fundraising campaigns, writing grant proposals, planning community events, reviewing donor engagement metrics, and sharing the story of the Northern Illinois Hospice Foundation with supporters. Every conversation, campaign, and connection helps strengthen the future of hospice care in our region.


Development Manager Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with the Foundation Executive Director to develop and implement fundraising strategies, annual campaigns, and donor engagement initiatives that achieve revenue goals.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, community partners, volunteers, sponsors, and prospective supporters.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship activities, and community engagement efforts, using metrics and reporting to measure success.
  • Research, write, submit, and manage grant applications, while maintaining grant calendars, reporting requirements, and renewal opportunities.
  • Partner with leadership and departments across the organization to identify fundraising opportunities, gather grant information, and support philanthropic initiatives.
  • Develop and coordinate donor communications, including newsletters, appeals, impact reports, acknowledgments, social media content, and stewardship materials.
  • Assist in planning and executing fundraising events, donor appreciation events, and community outreach activities, including logistics, sponsorships, vendors, volunteers, and event communications.
  • Maintain accurate donor and gift records in DonorPerfect, ensuring proper gift processing, acknowledgments, reporting, database integrity, confidentiality, and compliance.
  • Generate donor, fundraising, and event reports; manage mailing lists; coordinate database reconciliations with Finance; and support donor recognition efforts.
  • Provide training and backup support for donation data entry and administrative functions while maintaining HIPAA compliance and ethical fundraising standards.
  • Work closely with the Foundation Executive Director to identify strategic opportunities and foster relationships with professionalism, discretion, and sensitivity.


Requirements of the Development Manager:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience. 
  • Five (5) or more years of experience one of more of the following: in development/fundraising, or comparable work experience in marketing, communications, public relations, campaign management, project management, event planning, and relationship building.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates superior communications skills and ability to understand and provide excellence in customer service.
  • Critical thinking ability and application.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and gain results through others; directly or indirectly supervise and manage professional and administrative personnel, as needed.
  • Demonstrates autonomy, organization, assertiveness, flexibility and cooperation in performing job responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of corporate business management.
  • CFRE certification is desirable but not required.


Salary Description

We support our employees' wellbeing and regularly benchmark with other companies in our industry to offer an extensive Total Reward package for this position. The expected base salary range for this role is $ 57,790 - $78,016. However, final base pay will be carefully determined based on several factors, including education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Additionally, this role may be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits.
