JOB TITLE: Bus Driver (9 month position)

SALARY RANGE: ย  15.38 per hour

POSITION: Bus Driver

ย 

BOARD APPROVED: May 2000

SUMMARY:ย  Under general supervision, performs work in the operation of a school bus and/or other passenger vehicles.ย  Ensures the safe and efficient transportation of students and/or assigned personnel along predetermined, scheduled routes or to special events.

ย 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:ย  This position is under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor.ย  Drivers are expected to perform assignments with only minimal direction and instruction.ย  Incumbents are distinguished from the Transportation Supervisor or higher level management by the lack of responsibility for hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining other drivers.

ย 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists.ย  Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

ย 
  1. Drive a school bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.

  2. Transport students and teachers on field trips to various locations making departure and arrival time as scheduled.

  3. Maintain proper order and discipline among students riding the bus.

  4. Inspect buses in accordance with predetermined safety inspection requirements, and report any discrepancies to the Vehicle Maintenance Department.

  5. Follow established incident/accident procedures.

  6. Report all incidents/accidents and complete required reports.

  7. Clean, sweep, wash and fuel buses.

  8. Attend scheduled safety meetings and safety programs as required; perform necessary drills with students.

  • State laws, rules and regulations pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation;ย 

  • Basic first aid practices;ย 

  • Safe driving practices; and

  • Recordkeeping practices.ย

  • Operate a bus observing legal and defensive driving practices;

  • Maintain vehicles in a clean and safe condition;

  • Monitor student passengers' behavior;

  • Perform first aid as needed;

  • Learn a designated bus route including stops and traffic hazards;

  • Meet schedules and timelines;

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

  • Use tact, patience and courtesy with those contacted in the course of work;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships;

  • Work independently in the absence of a supervisor;

  • Maintain regular attendance; and

  • Maintain good physical condition.

  • Makes all job-related decisions based on the needs of the students and district based as identified in policy and by supervisor.

Required Certifications and Licenses:ย

  • Be able to obtain and maintain appropriate and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brakes, Passenger and School Bus endorsements.

  • Be able to pass and maintain a CDL medical physical as required by the Nevada Department of Education. (DOT allows a variance for route drivers, NDOE does not allow the waiver).

High School Diploma or equivalent (if none at time of hire - Must sign an agreement that states they will enroll in our Adult Ed program within 6 months of date of hire and complete the program within 1 year of date of hire)

Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to drive a school bus for prolonged periods of time.ย  Strength and stamina to sit for long periods of time.ย  Dexterity and coordination to handle emergency driving situations.ย  Hearing ability in order to listen for behavioral concerns from students.ย  Some bending, reaching, squatting, and stooping to do minor maintenance checks on the bus.ย  The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate a bus under stressful conditions.ย ย

WORK ENVIRONMENT & JOB RISK FACTORSย

Work environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, or odors.ย  Work is normally performed inside of school bus, where noise levels may exceed the average.ย  Disturbances from students may be frequent.ย  May experience hazardous road conditions during the winter months of the year, as well as rain and wind throughout the year.

BloodBorne Pathogens:ย  An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work, you will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided annually.ย
