Job description

Church Custodian, Maintenance Supervisor, and Assistant Cemetery Operator
This position is for St. Mary Parish in Appleton
Job Title: St. Mary Parish Church Custodian and Maintenance Supervisor
Job Summary: The Church Custodian, Maintenance Supervisor and Assistant Cemetery Operator is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, functionality and orderliness of the church facilities, the school building and the basic operations of the cemetery when the manager is offsite.
This includes cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, vacuuming and mopping floors, dusting and wiping surfaces, and ensuring that all areas are presentable and ready for use. The Church Custodian also performs the setting up and taking down of equipment for events and activities held in the church.
In addition, the position requires basic repair and maintenance of all building systems, including minor plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, drywall, painting, carpet and tile, lighting, and other associated repairs in both the Church, Offices, and School Building.
This position will also require the applicant work in the Church cemetery and be trained in all areas of the cemetery management including grounds maintenance, equipment repair and maintenance, grave site location, grave opening, burials, and grave closing. Some plot and niche sales, and record keeping will be required.
The position also includes lawn maintenance, snow and ice removal, minor tree and shrub care on the entire property.
The Custodian and Maintenance Supervisor will also be in charge of arranging for various tradesmen to estimate, and repair the infrastructure of the Church and School Buildings in coordination with the Facilities Director.

Responsibilities:
For the Parish and School:
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms
  • Vacuum and mop floors
  • Dust and wipe surfaces
  • Empty trash and recycling bins
  • Ensure that all areas are presentable and ready for use
  • Setting up and taking down equipment for events and activities
  • Report any maintenance or repair needs that you are unable to complete to the appropriate person
  • Perform other duties as assigned

For the Cemetery:
  • Cemetery Sales and Record Keeping
  • Locate and prepare grave sites for burials
  • Perform burials and restore the gravesite
  • Maintain Cemetery Equipment
  • Cemetery Building Cleaning and Upkeep
  • Mow and trim grass on Cemetery Grounds
  • Tree maintenance and removal

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to pass Virtus Training to work around children and vulnerable adults
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

  • Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects
  • Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as needed
  • Experience in general repair and maintenance of buildings and building systems

Physical Demands: The Church Custodian must be able to lift and move heavy objects, stand for extended periods of time, and perform repetitive motions. The position may require bending, stooping, and reaching.
Working Conditions: The Church Custodian will work primarily indoors, but is required to work outdoors for snow removal, lawn care, cemetery care, and exterior maintenance. The position may require working in areas with cleaning chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials.
