What are Building Automation Design Engineers?

Building Automation Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems that control various functions within buildings, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and security. Their work ensures buildings operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably while optimizing energy usage. They collaborate with architects, contractors, and facility managers to integrate automation systems into new or existing structures. These engineers must have a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, as well as proficiency in specialized software used for system design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, HVAC systems, and building automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in system design. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), AutoCAD, PLC programming, and certifications like LEED or Tridium Niagara are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, and effective communication with clients and contractors set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable building operations that meet client and regulatory expectations.

What are some typical challenges Building Automation Design Engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing building systems?

Building Automation Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing cybersecurity risks, and minimizing disruption to building operations. They must carefully assess existing infrastructure, coordinate with facility managers, and develop phased implementation plans to ensure smooth transitions. Staying updated with evolving industry standards and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams are essential to overcoming these obstacles and delivering effective automation solutions.

Job description

Amazon Web Services' Hardware Engineering team is looking for experienced professionals to help build the world's premier cloud computing platform. The Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering team designs, validates, and deploys automation solutions, including robotics, cobots, vision inspection, AI-powered quality systems, and automated assembly workflows, across contract manufacturer sites worldwide.
About the Role: You will own end-to-end program management for all Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering projects, driving execution from concept through production deployment. You manage the complete project portfolio: milestone tracking, resource coordination, cross-functional dependency management, risk identification, and stakeholder communication. You are the single-threaded owner for on-time delivery of automation projects, ensuring the team meets its commitments. You run weekly program reviews, manage escalation paths, and drive accountability across engineering, operations, and contract manufacturer teams.
The scope covers all server and rack assembly across all architectures and platforms, including compute, AI/ML accelerators, storage, and networking. The team designs intelligent, predictive-analytics-driven production systems where every station is sensor-driven, AI-optimized, and self-correcting, turning assembly lines into programmable, data-generating platforms that scale capacity without scaling headcount. This role requires the engineer to operate in a fast-paced, multi-platform international manufacturing environment with travel to contract manufacturer sites (up to 25-30% travel anticipated).
Key job responsibilities
• Own the complete automation project portfolio: milestone definition, tracking, and delivery accountability
• Drive cross-functional coordination across Hardware Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, and contract manufacturer teams
• Manage project risks, dependencies, and escalations; proactively identify and mitigate blockers
• Run weekly program reviews and produce executive-ready status communications
• Define resource allocation across concurrent automation projects and platform priorities
• Own automation deployment timelines aligned to product launch schedules
• Track and report project-level ROI, cost, and timeline metrics
• Coordinate with contract manufacturer program teams on automation integration milestones
About the team
About the team: The Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering team is building a centralized automation Center of Excellence that owns the process specification and IP for how AWS hardware gets assembled. The team is responsible for engineering, defining automated process requirements, designing and proving solutions at proof-of-concept, and maintaining AWS-owned intellectual property that scales globally. The team works within a collaborative framework across Hardware Engineering (product design for automation), Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering (process specification and validation), and Manufacturing Operations (deployment and scaling), ensuring automation is engineered once, proven once, and deployed everywhere.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience managing programs across cross functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, or related technical field
- 7+ years in technical program management in hardware, manufacturing, or operations environments
- Experience managing complex, cross-functional programs with multiple parallel workstreams
- Track record of delivering hardware or manufacturing programs on time and within budget
- Experience with program management tools and methodologies (e.g., Agile, waterfall, hybrid approaches)
- Strong stakeholder management and executive communication experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience
- Experience in automation, robotics, or manufacturing engineering organizations
- Experience managing programs across multiple geographies and contract manufacturers
- PMP or equivalent program management certification
- Experience with manufacturing NPI (new product introduction) processes
- Data center, server, or electronics manufacturing environment
- Experience with capital equipment procurement and deployment programs
- Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher)
