Job description

It is the responsibility of the Bridge Tender at the Charles Berry Bridge to provide safe passage to all commercial and recreational vessels, to monitor vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the Bridge, and report accidents or problems to the proper authorities. It is also necessary to work closely with the Coast Guard, Corps of Engineers, Ohio Department of Transportation (O.D.O.T.), the City of Lorain, and other agencies to maintain and operate the Bridge in a safe and efficient manner. the Charles Berry Bridge is operational 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Under direction, a successful candidate operates console that raises and lowers bridge, monitor approaching pedestrians and vehicles, conducts safety checks when ships approach.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent
  • Completion of 12 months experience as Bridge Tender Trainee.
  • Ability to demonstrate physical fitness.
  • Must possess a valid Ohio Vehicle Operators License and maintain continuing eligibility for coverage under the counties existing insurance policy.
  • Skill in operating drawbridge and operating radio equipment a plus
