Familiarity with diagnostic tools, control systems, and relevant certifications such as a Boiler Operator License are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure safe, efficient boiler operation, prevent equipment failure, and maintain compliance with safety regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by Boiler Techs, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Boiler Techs often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex mechanical or electronic boiler systems, working in confined or hot environments, and responding to emergency repairs promptly. Staying up-to-date with the latest technology and safety protocols helps in quickly diagnosing and resolving issues. Additionally, Boiler Techs benefit from strong communication skills, as they frequently collaborate with facility managers, maintenance teams, and sometimes outside contractors to ensure boiler systems operate safely and efficiently.

What does a Boiler Tech do?

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Boiler Technician with deep expertise in controls, instrumentation, and combustion systems. This role centers on the electrical side of boiler service - diagnosing faults, tuning burners, commissioning systems, and keeping equipment running safely through disciplined preventive maintenanceJob Requirements (What You'll Do)
  • Control & Instrumentation
    • Inspect, test, calibrate, and replace electrical control components.
  • Electrical Troubleshooting
    • Diagnose electrical faults across boiler control circuits using multimeters.
    • Trace wiring issues, identify failed components, and resolve intermittent faults systematically.
    • Read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, and control panel drawings to isolate root causes quickly and accurately.
  • Burner management & Combustion Tuning
    • Service and maintain burner management systems and flame safeguard controllers (Honeywell, Fireye, Siemens, Cleaver-Brooks, and similar).
    • Perform combustion analysis using flue gas analyzers. Tune air-to-fuel ratios across the full firing range to optimize efficiency, minimize emissions, and maintain safe operation.
    • Adjust and verify modulation control, high/low fire setpoints, and burner sequencing.
  • Preventative Maintenance
    • Perform scheduled electrical PM tasks on all boiler control systems.
    • Conduct annual safety device testing including low-water cutoff, high-limit, and flame failure response per code and insurance requirements.
  • Startups
    • Execute electrical commissioning on new installations and post-repair boiler systems. Verify wiring, confirm control power, and test all interlocks and safety devices prior to first fire.
    • Confirm proper sequencing, safety shutdown function, and setpoint configuration. Perform and document initial combustion analysis at startup.
  • Document all work, parts, and notes in NetSuite mobile.
  • Work independently in the field while coordinating with the service, parts, and sales team.
Experience & Qualifications
  • High School diploma required
  • 3+ years of field experience preferred (boiler industry, HVAC, or electrical controls)
  • Strong troubleshooting ability - able to diagnose issues, not just replace parts
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Boiler room equipment and steam systems
    • Combustion testing equipment
    • Parallel positioning systems and controllers
    • Electrical systems, test equipment, and conduit installation
    • PLC programs and control systems
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize work, and adapt in the field
  • Strong customer service skills and professional communication
  • Valid driver's license required with acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screening
Work Environment & Expectations
  • Flexibility to work overtime, nights, or weekends when needed
  • Participation in an on-call rotation for emergency service
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and safety standards
