Job description

The Opportunity

The Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring the Abortion Fund of Maryland's long-term health, mission alignment, and financial sustainability. Operating under a blended governance and capacity-building model, board members participate in committee work and support the Co-Executive Directors through governance, stewardship, and strategic guidance. The Co-Executive Directors lead the organization’s strategy, operations, and day-to-day management. Board members serve as advisors, ambassadors, and stewards, providing accountability and support while helping strengthen relationships with the communities we serve.

Board Member Expectations & Requirements
  • Be a Maryland resident and be able to serve a three-year term (January 2027–December 2029).
  • Attend quarterly in-person board meetings in Baltimore City and monthly virtual committee meetings and commit approximately 5–10 hours per month to board service.
  • Support bodily autonomy, abortion access, racial equity, and social justice.
  • Actively contribute to governance, fundraising, outreach, and committee work.
  • Serve as ambassadors for the organization by building relationships with donors, community partners, and supporters.
  • Stay informed about the organization’s work and abortion access issues in Maryland.
  • Uphold confidentiality, ethical standards, and a culture of engagement and inclusion.
Key Responsibilities

Governance & Leadership

  • Attend quarterly board meetings and actively participate in at least one committee.
  • Help guide the organization’s strategic direction, mission alignment, and long-term sustainability.
  • Contribute to a culture of transparency, racial equity, shared leadership, and community accountability.

Fundraising & Community Engagement

  • Support fundraising efforts through peer-to-peer fundraising, donor engagement, community outreach, and relationship-building.
  • Contribute time, connections, or in-kind resources that advance the organization’s mission and impact.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization within the community.

Board Development

  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, and mentorship of new board members.
  • Participate in training and ongoing learning opportunities related to governance, equity, and nonprofit leadership.
  • Help build a board that reflects the communities most impacted by barriers to abortion access.
