Brief Description of Duties
University of the District of Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) invites applications for full time tenure-track faculty position at the full professor level in Biomedical Engineering. The qualified candidate will also serve as the Director of the newly erected Specialized Technological Center for Assistive Rehabilitation (STAR) Research Center. The appointment is expected to be effective August 17, 2026.
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is an urban land-grant institution and is classified as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). UDC is the only public university in Washington, DC and it aims to offer comprehensive, quality post-secondary education that is affordable to DC residents at the certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels leading to PhD. Â Â Within UDC's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), there are ABET- accredited programs in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.Â
Over the past few years, the Biomedical Engineering program faculty have been awarded grants and sponsorships through the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Department of Defense (DOD), and the Department of Aging and Community Living (DACL). Via an awarded multi-million-dollar NIH grant, new STAR biomedical research laboratories were erected on the UDC campus with the objective that the facility will emerge as a national hub for cutting-edge biomechanical and rehabilitation engineering research in the areas of gait & balance, biomechanics, assistive robotics for rehabilitation, and virtual reality. Furthermore, the biomedical resources within close proximity to UDC are unparalleled (e.g., NIH, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, and the United States Food and Drug Administration).Â
Interested candidates must have an earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, or closely related field, and have a strong record of research, teaching and scholarly works that are commensurate with appointment, preferably at the senior level. The desired areas of expertise include but are not limited to Bioinstrumentation, Biomechanics, Gait & Balance, Assistive Technologies (such as Bio-robotics), Virtual Reality, Rehabilitation Engineering, Clinical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering influenced by big data, Machine Learning, and ArtificialI Intelligence.
The    responsibilities of the STAR Center's Director include creating a futuristic vision for the Center in the areas listed above. The Director is expected to foster multidisciplinary research interactions with internal and external agencies and build relationships in academic settings. Essential duties include:
- Conducting high quality research
- Establishing industrial partnerships
- Seeking external funding to support and ability to expand upon research activities
- Initiating innovative research projects across disciplines
- Managing faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students within the Center
- Participating in relevant teaching and outreach activitiesÂ
- Presenting at conferences and publishing peer-reviewed publications
Minimum Job Requirements
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other related fields
- Knowledge of human subject research and protocols
- Proven record of grantsmanship
- A track record of scholarly research
- Ability to work with the research team which includes undergraduate, graduate students, staff, faculty and postdoctoral associates
- Motivation and self-direction
- Exemplary problem-solving, as well as written and oral communication skills
- Eligibility to work legally in the United States
- Experience with biostatistics and data analysis is desirable
The successful candidate must have exceptional interpersonal communication and management skills necessary to promote programs to sustain and grow student enrollment and should have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Though not required, applicants with additional experience (e.g., postdoctoral experience, industrial experience, and/or experience with ABET accreditation) are welcomed. Faculty duties include developing research in the candidate's core area, teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, developing externally funded research projects, performing academic duties, as well as university and community services. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with other faculty members within the University to help develop cross-disciplinary research.Â
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
- An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate
- A record of scholarship and professional growth
- At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education. Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
