Position Summary:
Discovery is looking for a talented and passionate Biological Manufacturing Scientist 1 to join our dynamic Preclinical operations team. As a Biological Manufacturing Scientist 1, you will play a pivotal role in supporting robust, floor-level troubleshooting, and operational execution of our preclinical products. This role partners closely with R&D, Quality, Logistics, Sales, and Project Management to ensure products are manufactured with a high degree of quality, consistency, and operational excellence.
A Day in the Life of a Biological Manufacturing Scientist 1 at Discovery Life Sciences:
  • Execute hands-on manufacturing activities supporting the production of biologically derived products, including cell-based, tissue-based, and protein-based workflows.
  • Perform aseptic processing, cell culture, tissue handling, and biological material preparation in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Prepare buffers, reagents, media, and process solutions while maintaining accurate documentation and material traceability.
  • Monitor daily manufacturing operations, troubleshoot technical issues, and support real-time problem solving on the production floor.
  • Partner with Quality, R&D, Logistics, and Project Management teams to support investigations, product release activities, and new product introductions.
  • Participate in technology transfer activities and help transition new products and processes into routine manufacturing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and process robustness.
  • Develop subject matter expertise in manufacturing processes while training and mentoring fellow team members.

Must-Have Qualifications (Education, Skills, Experience):
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in biologics, cell culture, tissue-based, or life science manufacturing operations.
  • Proven manufacturing floor experience with basic cell culture, primary cell handling, reagent preparation, or formulation work.
  • Demonstrated ability to own or serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for at least one manufacturing process
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated capability to solve technical floor challenges independently.
  • Familiar with technology transfer workflow

Key Responsibilities:
Daily Operations & Process Support
  • Support daily manufacturing runs through hands-on technical execution, routine monitoring, and real-time issue resolution on the production floor.
  • Drive and uphold a strong "Right the First Time" manufacturing and quality culture across all assigned process steps.
  • Author, review, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), batch records, and technical manufacturing documents to support batch review readiness.
  • Track and document manufacturing metrics accurately to ensure strict compliance with process standards.
  • Manage manufacturing inventory and material transactions within the ERP system to ensure accurate inventory records, material traceability, production readiness, and timely execution of manufacturing activities

Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Perform root cause analysis and support deviation/CAPA investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Collaborate with Quality teams during technical investigations, nonconformance reporting, and document management activities.
  • Assist in identifying operational bottlenecks and implementing small-scale continuous improvement projects focused on enhancing efficiency, throughput, or process consistency.
  • Support the physical implementation and qualification of new manufacturing equipment, raw materials, or process modifications.

New Product Introduction & Training Support
  • Collaborate with R&D and Product Development groups to support the manufacturability, scaleup, and baseline operational readiness of incoming processes.
  • Assist during tech transfer activities, serving as a reliable manufacturing point-of-contact to bridge technical development and daily operations.
  • Crosstrain and mentor manufacturing associates and technicians on established production protocols, workflow best practices, and floor safety.
  • Present basic operational data, technical updates, and process recommendations clearly during cross-functional meetings.

Compensation and Benefits:
Discovery Life Sciences is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices, and we strive to provide employees with total compensation packages that are market competitive. For this role, the anticipated base pay range is $75,000 - $90,000 annually. Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter. The exact base pay offered for this role will depend on various factors, including the candidate's qualifications, skills, and experience. Your annual salary is only one part of your total compensation package. Other benefits include:
