Job description

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, and as a working nurse/ team leader, manages, plans, organizes, and directs all nursing activities in the Behavioral Health Crisis Center. Provides patient education and nursing services, advises caregivers, and makes necessary referrals for other services. Responsible for the quality of nursing care delivered in BHCC. Directs nursing staff of the BHCC.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
Supervision, Support and Training:
  • Supervises a staff of nurses clinically and administratively and plans work of assigned staff
  • provides training, mentoring, coaching and positive supervision to staff on an on-going basis
  • Liaises with psychiatrists and Advanced Practice Providers regarding medical services on the unit.
  • Anticipates problems and responds proactively; troubleshoots concerns and is solution focused.
  • Recommends and implements corrective action plans when programs or staff fail to meet deliverables.
  • Monitors leave, attendance, tardiness and other job expectations of staff, and addresses issues timely and according Advantage policy and procedure.
  • Interviews and follows HR protocols to bring on new staff timely to fill vacancies.
  • Follows Advantage disciplinary policies and procedures to address staff performance issues.
  • Meets and documents supervision with direct reports at least quarterly, more often for those under corrective action or those needing additional training/mentoring/support/monitoring
  • Review performance feedback provided by BHCC Assistant Nurse Manager
  • Supports nursing staff when coverage of shifts is needed
  • Participate in on-call rotation

Representation:
  • Represents Advantage at required trainings/meetings
  • Participates in agency meetings as necessary to ensure continuity
  • Attends DBHDD meetings, as required
  • Backs up BHCC Director, as needed

Professional Development:
  • Participates in internal and external educational programs and professional meetings as available for continuing professional education
  • Maintains license

Ensures High Quality Services
  • Consults and coordinates with health care and clinical team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate client care plans for clinic clients
  • Monitors quality of documentation by:
  1. Completing chart audits, and review CMD audits to ensure services are provided according to DBHDD and Agency guidelines.
  2. In collaboration with BHCC leadership, create/implement/monitor action plans to ensure scores are 90 or higher
  • Ensures services occur as scheduled.
  • Works in collaboration with program leadership, billing department, human resources, MIS and Care Management to increase program performance and quality; provides technical assistance when needed.
  • Participates on BHCC leadership Team to:
    1. Identifies areas where we need additional clarification, protocols, policies and/or procedures and brings to the attention of the Leadership team.
    2. When directed by the BHCC Director services, reviews and modifies policies and procedures and assists in development of policies and procedures, which promote smooth and effective implementation of project outcomes.
    3. Monitors data reporting, outcomes, and challenges and assesses program changes.
    4. reviews assessments, treatment plans, writing assessments, updates, technical assistance and consultation to determine service delivery options.
    5. follows up on actions plans with programs and designated staff to ensure follow up and timelines are established and met to provide services deliverables.
    6. makes services recommendations and action plans to streamline services.
    7. Leads regular staff meetings.
  • Reviews and responds to critical incidents, support with action plans

Ensures Adherence to Program Guidelines/Requirements/Expectations
  • Demonstrates a diverse knowledge of rules and regulations that govern the agency. Stays current on updates/changes in regulations and requirements of DBHDD and other overseers of services.
  • Monitors KPIs, including but not limited to:
    1. How quickly referrals are reviewed/decisions are made
    2. Average length of stay
    3. Referral sources
    4. Discharge locations
    5. DBHDD requirements, such as:
      1. Nursing Assessments and Nursing Care plans are created timely, according to requirements
      2. Other KPIs and requirements of DBHDD, HFR, CMS, etc.
      3. Observation, evaluations, assessments, vitals, and documentation completed according to guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Ensures ongoing adherence to all licensing bodies, Understand/implement and ensure all compliance with state, county and federal rules and regulations

Customer Service:
  • Acts as client advocate in order to coordinate required services or to resolve crisis
  • Identifies environmental impediments to client of patient progress through interviews and review of patient records
  • Conducts interviews with consumers, family members, legal guardians, caregivers and primary care physicians as needed.
  • Represents the agency and program in an informed and courteous manner with all external contacts and community linkages
  • Maintains professional behavior when completing tasks and interacting with others as a team member
  • Communicates effectively and collaboratively with others to obtain information; ensures response within designated timeframe
  • Promotes customer satisfaction and assists with resolving grievances, complaints and inquiries
  • Works with BHCC staff in a team approach

Understands and works within BHCC Budget
  • Monitors spending and program budgets
  • Manages staffing by ensuring we are following staffing pattern as budgeted

Safety and Risk Management
  • Reviews incidents and critical incidents, creating action plans to address areas, as needed
  • Tracks/logs trends and addresses with corrective action plans, when needed
  • Monitors medication errors/variances, identifies trends, and creates corrective action plans to address

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) License with current registration.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills.
  • Extensive experience in clinical practice and patient care.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience in staff management, including coaching, mentoring, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Knowledge of state regulations, care partner protocols, and quality assurance processes in healthcare settings.
  • Ability to manage and address medication variances and patient safety concerns.
  • Previous experience in Crisis Acute Care settings is a plus.
