In addition, Personal Care Attendants are expected to:
  • Work one-on-one with a specific scholar needing academic and/or behavioral support
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport for and with scholar
  • Manage scholar behavior to allow for high levels of engagement with the content
  • Model a precise and expressive use of language to effectively communicate with scholar, including expectations for learning, directions for activities, and explanations of content
  • Intellectually engage all scholars in learning through well-designed learning tasks and activities created with special educators that require complex thinking, and include appropriate scaffolding
  • When necessary, assist in the use of toilet facilities

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of special education preferred
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences preferred
  • Bilingual candidates preferred, but not required
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma required
  • CPI certification required
  • 2 years of experience as aide/paraprofessional in a diverse educational setting required
  • Be of good character

Meet one (1) of the following requirements:
• Successfully passed the ParaPro Assessment.
• Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education
• Hold an associate's degree or higher
Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE).
Three (3) exceptions to this qualification:
• Hired before January 1, 1999
• Certification as a TA in another state,
• Hold an associate's degree or higher AND have completed coursework or other training consistent with the teacher assistant program standards.
Compensation Range:
  • $36,419 - $40,253
