Job description

Manages the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of operations and staff associated with patient Bed Management, Transfers and Logistics. Oversees communication and coordination with internal patient care service areas, attending physicians and their office staff, and other facilities for the safe, efficient and well-timed movement of patients.

Job Responsibility

  • Provides leadership to Bed Management team members and supervisors by communicating and guiding toward achieving department objectives.
  • Develops, communicates, and builds consensus for goals in alignment with the health system.
  • Maintains current knowledge of and ensures compliance with all regulatory and professional standards of care; utilizes creativity in developing quality/performance improvement programs, instructing staff, and implementing new, and improved standards.
  • Manages staff, supply and equipment budgets in collaboration with the staff and support department directors; develops long-term staffing schedules and ensures adequate daily coverage in accordance with established staffing needs; develops measures and monitors operational performance metrics.
  • Participates-in and leads performance improvement activities related directly with patient flow and care-in-transit within the hospital and between facilities; maintains a safe and caring environment conducive to internal and external patient movement; patient and family expectations of care; develops goals and objectives to support the institutional values and goals, with input from staff.
  • Recognizes the need for patient care to be delivered in a culturally sensitive manner and role models sensitivity to staff; participates in the overall planning process for patient access and flow services; develops and recommends goals and objectives for the department.
  • Oversees communication and coordination with internal patient care service areas, attending physicians and their office staff, and other facilities for the safe, efficient and well-timed movement of patients; uses findings from patient satisfaction survey and with input from the staff, to establish unit based customer services agenda; uses findings from staff satisfaction survey and with input from the staff, to establish a unit based recruitment and retention agenda.
  • Provides education, guidance and support to all clinical service lines to promote optimal use of and compliance with bed management and transfer services; responds to patient and family concerns or complaints; develops marketing materials, i.e., pamphlets and brochures to promote the program.
  • Visits referring physicians and ensure awareness of and satisfaction with transfer center; visit referring hospitals and other referring agencies to promote awareness and monitor satisfaction; provide education, guidance and support to all referring agencies, EMS and upon special request.
  • Provide immediate follow-up with referring agencies when necessary; selects, develops, manages and evaluates direct reports; oversees the selection, development, management and evaluation of indirect reports; consults with Human Resources regarding employee issues/problems, counseling, progressive discipline and termination, as needed.
  • Creates and maintains a supportive working environment for staff; responds to staff concerns and functions proactively to retain staff; establishes unit metrics and goals to measure effectiveness of retention strategies.

Job Qualification

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing required.
  • Current License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • 6-8 years of relevant experience and 2-5 years of leadership / management experience, required.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Experience with Epic and/or TeleTracking patient flow modules.
  • Previous experience implementing or managing hospital bed boards or transfer center operations.
  • Comfortable working with all Microsoft tools: Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Comfortable leading teams and implementing new processes
