A BCSO Cadet is a Burnet County Sheriff's Office member who has been hired and sponsored to attend a TCOLE-approved law enforcement academy or is currently attending such an academy. To qualify, the applicant must be able to gain entrance into the academy, meet all relevant requirements, and be at least twenty-one (21) years of age by the time of academy graduation. Full probationary Deputy Sheriff employment is conditional and contingent upon successful completion of the academy and passing the TCOLE licensing examination. This position involves entry-level law enforcement work under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of independent judgment.
Required Documents and Standards Applicants must download, complete, sign, and (where applicable) have notarized the following documents. These must be submitted by the specified deadline. Incomplete applications may result in disqualification. • Completion of Human Resources online application • Completion of Personal History Statement and Background Documents • All applicants will have to take the physical fitness test prior to being accepted into the academy. This test consists of rowing 2,000 meters for time on a Concept II rowing machine. The VO2 max percentage to enter the academy is 25 percent. The required time to complete this test is based on the applicants age, weight and sex. See attached file in order to determine what time you have to complete this test. • See page 5 for rowing test calculator instructions
Additional instructions on how to submit these documents will be provided during the application process. Once all required forms are received, A preliminary background check will be conducted, and you will be notified if you are selected to continue to the written test, physical test and oral board interview.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities 1. Academic Requirements o Maintain academic viability in the approved law enforcement academy as required. 2. Communication with BCSO o Report to assigned personnel within the Burnet County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) regularly regarding academy status, events, equipment needs, or other requirements to remain in good standing as a cadet. 3. Policies and Standards o Adhere to all BCSO and Burnet County personnel standards and policies. o Follow all conduct rules and regulations as required by the academy, Burnet County, and the BCSO. 4. Academy Attendance o Attend all classes, training activities, demonstrations, or other events listed in the academy schedule unless excused by the Academy Director or authorized BCSO staff.
5. Professionalism o Maintain professional bearing and posture while at the academy, as you represent the Burnet County Sheriff's Office. 6. Physical Fitness o Meet or exceed the minimum physical fitness curriculum as established by the academy. 7. Reporting Injuries o Report any injury or condition that may impair your ability to remain in compliance with academy and BCSO requirements. 8. Work Assignments o During any normal work week in which the academy is not in session, the cadet may be assigned duties at the BCSO as needed. 9. Other Duties o Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience • High School Diploma or Equivalent Must have a high school diploma or GED.
Required Certificates & Licenses • Valid Driver's License Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
• TCOLE Eligibility Must meet all eligibility requirements for TCOLE licensure as defined by 37 Texas Administrative Code §217.1.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities • Physical & Psychological Exams Must pass a full agility exam, TCOLE-required medical exam, TCOLE-required psychological exam, and have normal (or corrected) speech, vision, and hearing. • Knowledge for Law Enforcement Must be able to develop and demonstrate all knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a uniformed peace officer after completing the academy and passing the TCOLE exam.
Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the cadet may be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, or hear. The cadet must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and be able to lift, push, or pull up to and in excess of 100 pounds with or without assistance, as required. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position, in accordance with Burnet County policies and applicable laws.
