As of May 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for battery modeling internship in the United States is $17.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Modeling Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Modeling Intern, you need a strong background in electrochemistry, mathematics, and engineering, often supported by coursework or a degree in chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL Multiphysics, or Python, as well as knowledge of battery management systems and modeling software, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies enable accurate battery model development, efficient collaboration on research projects, and innovative solutions to complex energy storage challenges.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Battery Modeling Internship?

As a Battery Modeling Intern, you will typically work on projects involving the simulation, analysis, and optimization of battery systems using specialized software tools. Your daily tasks may include developing mathematical models, analyzing battery performance data, and assisting with experimental validation of models. Collaboration with research scientists, engineers, and other interns is common, providing opportunities to contribute to multidisciplinary teams. These experiences help you build practical skills and gain valuable exposure to cutting-edge battery technologies in both academic and industry settings.

What is a Battery Modeling Internship?

A Battery Modeling Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work with experts to develop and analyze mathematical models that predict the performance, behavior, and lifespan of batteries. Interns typically use software tools and scientific methods to simulate how batteries operate under different conditions. This experience helps interns gain practical skills in battery technology, data analysis, and computational modeling, which are valuable in the energy storage and electric vehicle industries.

What is the difference between Battery Modeling Internship vs Battery Design Engineer?

AspectBattery Modeling InternshipBattery Design Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, corporate R&D centers, or university settingsDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departments
Industry UsageUsed for simulation, analysis, and testing of battery modelsInvolved in designing, prototyping, and testing battery systems
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

The Battery Modeling Internship focuses on developing and analyzing battery models through simulations, often for research or testing purposes. In contrast, the Battery Design Engineer is responsible for creating and optimizing actual battery systems and components. While both roles require a strong background in engineering and familiarity with batteries, internships are more research-oriented, whereas design roles involve hands-on development and manufacturing.

Job description

Who You Are

Are you a thoughtful, creative, and code-savvy simulation scientist or engineer? We are looking for someone who sits at the intersection of computer science and electrochemistry. You might be a software engineer with a passion for physics, or a theorist with a talent for building robust software infrastructure.

Sila Nanotechnologies is seeking a Battery Simulation & Computational Scientist (Intern) to:

  • Architect and implement physics-based battery models using PyBaMM.
  • Bridge the gap between theoretical equations and production-grade software code.
  • Leverage key insights from our battery models to accelerate learning cycles and reduce the cost of empirical R&D.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Commit to a 6+ month internship (Remote or Onsite); this is not a position for students only available for summer months.
  • Analyze electrochemical data to build, parameterize, and apply new numerical models.
  • Fit electrochemical models to experimental data and evaluate model performance across a range of different electrochemical test techniques.
  • Support infrastructure development, helping to build the backend pipelines and tools that bring physics-based models to a wider audience.
  • Work closely with scientists and cross-functional teams to discover and communicate knowledge for the long-term development of our next-generation battery materials.
  • Invest in our values and champion them as we grow.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • BSc (or preferably MSc/currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program) or equivalent research experience in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Strong experience using PyBaMM (Python Battery Mathematical Modeling) is required.
  • Mastery of Python, including standard scientific libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas).
  • Experience interacting with databases using SQL or Snowflake.
  • Proficient with Git and collaboration platforms (GitHub or GitLab).
  • Ability to navigate and execute workflows in Linux or macOS terminal environments.
  • Knowledge of electrochemical theory and the application of the P2D (Pseudo-Two-Dimensional) or Doyle-Fuller-Newman models.
  • Public contributions to the PyBaMM repository or related sister projects on GitHub.
  • Proficiency in using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot) and knowledge of effective prompting techniques to accelerate development.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), or some exposure to full-stack development.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location
  • This role is open to Remote candidates.

The starting base pay for this role is between $25/hr and $39/hr at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila's competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, and equity.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for overtime.
