What are some common challenges Battery Engineers face when developing new battery technologies?

Battery Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing energy density, safety, and cost when designing new battery technologies. Achieving higher performance without compromising the lifespan or safety of the battery is a complex task that requires extensive testing and collaboration with materials scientists, electrical engineers, and manufacturing teams. Additionally, staying current with evolving industry standards and environmental regulations is crucial. These challenges make adaptability, teamwork, and problem-solving essential skills for success in this field.

What are Battery Engineers?

Battery Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and improve batteries and energy storage systems. They work on creating more efficient, reliable, and safe batteries for a variety of applications, including electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy systems. Their responsibilities often include materials research, prototype development, performance testing, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Battery Engineers collaborate with other engineers and scientists to push the boundaries of battery technology and contribute to advancements in energy storage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Engineer, you need a solid background in electrochemistry, materials science, and electrical engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), simulation software (such as COMSOL or MATLAB), and safety certification standards is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing safe, efficient, and innovative battery technologies that meet industry demands.

What Does a Battery Engineer Do?

As a battery engineer, you work in power technology to design batteries of all types—common types include Alkaline and Lithium-ion batteries. Your job is to create an energy cell system using a cathode, anode, and electrode in various designs. Other duties include electrochemical cell fabrication, researching innovative energy materials, and working with lab technicians to complete projects. A battery engineer may also participate in ongoing research projects, helping create the energy sources of tomorrow.

What is the difference between Battery Engineer vs Battery Technician?

AspectBattery EngineerBattery Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications like PE or EITTechnical diploma or associate degree, specialized training
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, testing in labs or R&D facilitiesInstallation, maintenance, troubleshooting in field or manufacturing
Job FocusResearch, design, improve battery systemsRepair, testing, and servicing batteries and systems

Battery Engineers focus on designing and developing new battery technologies, while Battery Technicians handle installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Both roles are essential in the battery industry but differ in responsibilities, education, and work settings.

Job description

Battery Quality Engineer
Summary/Objective
Forge Nano Inc., a rapidly growing advanced materials company specializing in nano-scale coatings across diverse markets, is seeking a highly experienced Battery Quality Engineer to support incoming material quality control and quality testing functions primarily for the Battery Prototype Line. This role involves overseeing the material lifecycle, including receiving and verifying incoming shipments, conducting analytical testing to ensure materials meet quality standards, and providing in-process quality control testing through all stages of production to final product release. The ideal candidate is skilled in hands-on laboratory work, capable of independently generating reliable data, and has a solid understanding of electrochemistry and safety principles relevant to the testing process. The Battery Quality Engineer will report to the QMS Manager.
Key Responsibilities (not and exhaustive list of responsibilities)
  • Receive and log incoming raw materials per Shipping & Receiving and Procurement procedures
  • Qualify Incoming Material & Supplier Quality
    • Perform incoming inspection (IQC) and sampling of raw materials and components according to approved inspection plans and acceptance criteria/spec.
    • Review and trend supplier Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and material performance data.
    • Support supplier quality investigations and material disposition decisions.
    • Assist with supplier corrective action requests (SCARs) for material-related quality issues.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC):
    • Collect and analyze critical-to-quality process parameter, perform process capability studies (Cp/Cpk) and control charts
    • Analyze and trend incoming material, in-process, and final product quality data to identify process variation, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in root cause investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone, 8D, etc.).
  • Metrology and Measurement System:
    • Perform and support measurement system evaluations, including Gauge R&R studies.
    • Maintain inspection methods, work instructions, and measurement equipment qualification records.
    • Verify calibration status of inspection and test equipment prior to use.
  • Verify shipments against PO, COA, and DOT/IATA/49 CFR §173.185 documentation; hold nonconforming or undocumented shipments
  • Execute hands-on experiments to qualify materials against specification prior to release for build
  • Support in-process QC checks during Prototype Line production (thickness, viscosity, coating/burr verifications)
  • Perform QC checks on products (visual, weight, dimensional) and support final product release
  • Record results accurately and maintain traceability from material lot to finished cell
  • Flag out-of-spec results, quarantine nonconforming products, and support corrective action processes
  • Support ISO 9001 compliance
  • Coordinate and support equipment calibration activities, including performing internal calibration tracking and arranging external calibration serves as needed.
  • Work cross functionally with the battery prototype line, the quality control group and the battery R&D groups.
  • Safety and Dry Room Compliance
    • Follow and promote safe handling practices for hazardous chemicals, powders, solvents, and lithium-ion battery materials.
    • Monitor and verify environmental conditions such as dry-room dew point, temperature, and humidity where applicable.

Required Qualifications
