Contract Electrical Engineering involves temporary, project-specific work often with flexible locations, while Electrical Engineering typically refers to full-time roles within organizations. Both roles require relevant credentials, but contract roles emphasize adaptability and freelance work, whereas full-time electrical engineers focus on ongoing development and design within companies.

What are contract electrical engineers?

Contract electrical engineers are professionals who work on a temporary or project-specific basis to design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing and installation of electrical systems and equipment. Unlike full-time employees, they are usually hired for a set duration or to complete specific projects, offering flexibility to both employers and engineers. Their work can span industries such as construction, manufacturing, energy, and telecommunications. Contract electrical engineers often bring specialized expertise and can help organizations meet tight deadlines or fill skill gaps without committing to long-term employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and relevant industry experience, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium), simulation tools, and knowledge of electrical codes and standards is crucial, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, time management, and effective communication skills help you excel in client-facing and project-based environments. These competencies are vital for delivering quality results on time, ensuring compliance, and maintaining strong professional relationships while working independently or with diverse teams.

Job description

THE COMPANY:

STACK INFRASTRUCTURE (STACK) provides digital infrastructure to scale the world's most innovative companies. We are an award-winning industry leader in building, owning, and operating highly efficient, cost-effective wholesale, colocation, and cloud data centers. Each of our national facilities meets or exceeds the highest industry standards in all operational categories of availability, security, connectivity, and physical resilience.

STACK offers the scale and geographic reach that rapidly growing hyperscale and enterprise companies need. The world runs on data. Data runs on STACK.

THE POSITION:

At STACK, the Director, Electrical Engineering & Design will lead innovation initiatives, maintain and enhance company electrical design standards, and direct, coordinate, and oversee project-specific engineering activities in support of STACK's development of cost-effective, scalable, resilient, and energy-efficient data center facilities that meet the current and future needs of its customers.

Acting as the subject matter expert for concurrently maintainable electrical power systems within mission critical facilities, the Director, Electrical Engineering & Design will serve as a senior technical leader responsible for guiding electrical engineering strategy, design governance, and project execution across STACK's data center developments.

The Director, Electrical Engineering & Design will partner closely with Development, Construction, Operations, Procurement, and external engineering consultants to ensure technical excellence, consistency, and operational reliability across multiple concurrent projects. Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Lead the review, validation, and approval of project contract documents produced by third-party design consultants (EORs), ensuring compliance with STACK standards, reliability objectives, and project requirements with minimal oversight.

  • Direct and oversee project execution to ensure alignment with schedule, budget, quality, and operational expectations.

  • Provide technical leadership and engineering expertise throughout all phases of project delivery, including planning, design, construction, commissioning, and field coordination.

  • Lead the review and approval of owner furnished contractor installed (OFCI) equipment and systems, including vendor submittals, technical evaluations, factory witness testing, and procurement support.

  • Provide technical leadership and resolution for RFIs, submittals, design clarifications, and field engineering issues during active design and construction.

  • Evaluate, approve, and implement engineering design changes while ensuring alignment with project requirements, operational standards, and reliability objectives.

  • Coordinate with construction teams, consultants, vendors, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical and field issues in a timely and effective manner.

  • Maintain, improve, and update legacy Basis of Design (BOD) documents and company engineering standards to support consistency across the organization.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to electrical engineering practices, technical standards, resiliency, constructability, and operational efficiency.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve energy efficiency, scalability, sustainability, and cost optimization across projects and existing facilities.

  • Communicate and enforce engineering policies, standards, practices, and design methodologies to ensure consistent execution across the organization.

  • Maintain expertise in emerging technologies, market trends, and industry best practices related to mission critical electrical infrastructure and data center design.

  • Provide engineering guidance and technical support for operations and infrastructure improvements within existing STACK facilities.

  • Develop and maintain technical specifications for owner furnished contractor installed (OFCI) electrical equipment and systems.

  • Assist in the development of new Basis of Design (BOD) standards and engineering solutions to support evolving business and customer requirements.

  • Lead and mentor internal engineering staff while fostering technical development and engineering excellence across the organization.

  • Drive alignment across Development, Construction, Operations, Procurement, and external partners to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple concurrent projects and regional developments.

  • Drive long-term electrical infrastructure strategy focused on resiliency, scalability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and electrical infrastructure solutions for applicability, scalability, resiliency, sustainability, and cost optimization.

  • Support capital planning, portfolio-wide engineering initiatives, and strategic technical decision-making.

  • Experienced in reviewing Harmonic, SCCAF, Reliability and Availability studies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
