About the Role - Cell Engineer

Peak Energy is seeking aย Cell Engineer toย play a key roleย in evaluating relevant sodium-ion technologies. Your efforts will ensure cross-functional alignment,ย timelyย delivery of projects, and the successful advancement of ourย sodium-ion battery systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of renewable energy storage and grid resilience.ย 

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Leadย next-generation cell design and quantitatively assess tradeoffs betweenย cellย electrochemical performance,ย cost,ย and cell energy density toย optimizeย product impact.ย ย 
  • Cost and performance modeling ofย advanced cell designs, including materialย selectionย and electrode design.ย 
  • Analyze cell testing data to troubleshootย and understandย performance issues andย identifyย key areas of improvement.ย 
  • Cell failure-mode analysis and method development toward degradation mechanism resolution.ย 
  • Work with international and domestic battery material suppliers to guide technology roadmaps.ย ย 
  • Benchmarkย next-generationย materials and cell designs throughย electrochemical and physical testing ofย coin and pouch cells.ย 
  • Contribute to the optimization ofย electrode formulations,ย coatings,ย andย materialย selectionย to enhance cellย energy density and performance.ย 
  • Identifyย and resolve process challenges related to scale up of cell designs (e.g., cell assembly, electrolyte filling, formation processes).ย 
  • Collaborate cross-functionally, partnering with theย supplierย industrializationย engineeringย teams, and energy storage system teamsย and cell manufacturing partnersย toย facilitateย the scaling of cell designs from the lab to pilot production and mass manufacturing.ย 

What You'll Bring (Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's,Master'sor Ph.D.inEngineering, Chemistry, Material Science, ora related field.ย 
  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience in cell, battery, or electrochemicalย testing & developmentย withย demonstratedย ownership of R&D or cell design.ย 
  • Strong knowledge of electrochemistry and battery fundamentals, and able to communicate these skills within the context of an appliedย cellย development framework.ย ย 
  • Deep hands-onย expertiseย in electrochemical characterization methodsย (DCIR/HPPC, EIS, cycle life, calendar life,ย dQ/dV) and the instrumentation behind them.ย ย 
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and make informed decisions.ย ย 
  • Strong communicationย skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.ย 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and develop a deep technical understanding of a broad range of topics.ย ย 
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.ย ย

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master'sor Ph.D.inEngineering, Chemistry, Material Science, ora related field andย 5+ years of relevant industry experience in cell, battery, or electrochemical testing & development withย demonstratedย ownership of R&D or cell design.ย 
  • Hands-on experience with pouch cell fabrication and testing.ย 
  • Experience and understanding of electrode fabrication via slurry or dry electrode processingย and how these processes relate to cell performance.ย 
  • Experience in theย production and/or characterization ofย battery materials, electrodes, and cells.ย ย 
  • A strong understanding of liquid electrolyte development strategies.ย 
  • Experience in manufacturingย and mass production of batteries.ย 
  • Proficiencyย inย Pythonย for data analysis.ย

Compensation & Benefitsย
