What is a ballet internship?

A ballet internship is a temporary position that provides hands-on experience in a professional dance environment, often with a ballet company, school, or related organization. Interns may assist with rehearsals, performances, administrative tasks, or educational outreach, depending on the program's focus. The goal is to help aspiring dancers or arts professionals gain practical knowledge, build their resumes, and make industry connections. Ballet internships are valuable for those seeking a career in dance or arts administration, offering insight into the daily workings of the ballet world.

What kinds of responsibilities and learning experiences can I expect during a ballet internship?

During a ballet internship, you can expect a mix of hands-on dance training, rehearsal observation, and behind-the-scenes exposure to the operations of a professional ballet company. Interns often assist with classes, help coordinate rehearsals, and may support administrative or outreach activities. You'll have the opportunity to learn from seasoned dancers, choreographers, and artistic staff, gaining insights into both performance and the management side of ballet. This experience is invaluable for building connections, developing discipline, and understanding the expectations of a professional dance environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ballet intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ballet Intern, a solid background in classical ballet technique, physical fitness, and prior dance training—often demonstrated through auditions or enrollment in a dance program—is essential. Familiarity with studio etiquette, rehearsal schedules, and occasionally dance notation software like Benesh or Labanotation may be expected. Commitment, adaptability, a strong work ethic, and the ability to accept feedback gracefully set standout interns apart. These skills ensure interns can learn quickly, integrate into professional dance environments, and contribute positively to productions and company culture.
