How does an Automation Analyst typically collaborate with other departments to implement process improvements?

Automation Analysts frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with IT, operations, and business process teams to identify inefficiencies and develop automation solutions. They gather requirements from stakeholders, map existing workflows, and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical team members. Regular meetings and feedback sessions are common to ensure that automated solutions align with business objectives and user needs. This collaborative approach not only streamlines processes but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement within the organization.

What is the difference between Automation Analyst vs Data Analyst?

AspectAutomation AnalystData Analyst

Automation Analysts focus on designing and implementing automation solutions to streamline processes, often working closely with IT teams. Data Analysts interpret data to support decision-making through reports and visualizations. While both roles require analytical skills, Automation Analysts specialize in automation tools and workflows, whereas Data Analysts focus on data analysis and insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automation Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Analyst, you need a solid background in process analysis, scripting or programming, and a relevant degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with automation tools such as UiPath, Blue Prism, or Automation Anywhere, as well as experience with workflow management systems and process mapping software, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for identifying automation opportunities, designing efficient solutions, and collaborating across teams to drive process improvements.

What are Automation Analysts?

Automation Analysts are professionals who evaluate business processes and identify opportunities for automation to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort. They work closely with various departments to analyze workflows, design automated solutions, and implement software tools such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Automation Analysts also test and monitor automated processes to ensure they meet organizational goals, maintain quality, and comply with standards. Their role is crucial in helping companies streamline operations and drive digital transformation.

Job description

This is a critical position focused on building and scaling next-generation automated workflows across engineering and project execution teams.

The individual will operate at the intersection of Industrial & Systems Engineering, data management, and AI-assisted workflow development.

Role Overview

This role is responsible for discovering inefficiencies in current engineering and execution workflows, designing structured automation solutions, and scaling them into maintainable, production-ready systems.

The candidate must be capable of both technical execution and driving organizational adoption through documentation and training.

This is not a pure IT or software development role. We are specifically looking for someone who can:

  • Work within engineering environments (CAD/design/data systems)
  • Understand how work is performed today
  • Translate that into structured, logic-based improvements

ย

Primary Responsibilities

1. Process Discovery & Automation Development

  • Identify unoptimized or manual processes (CAD, reporting, data tracking, etc.)
  • Map current-state workflows and design automation solutions
  • Build solutions using SQL logic, AI-assisted tools, and scripting
  • Deliver quick wins while building toward scalable systems

2. System Ownership & Maintenance

  • Own existing automation tools, scripts, and repositories
  • Maintain and continuously improve current workflows
  • Troubleshoot and stabilize solutions to ensure reliability

3. Data Management & Validation

  • Work heavily with structured data (SQL Server, Excel, project systems)
  • Validate, clean, and standardize data across systems (CAD, CMS, reporting)
  • Build audit and validation processes to ensure data integrity

4. AI-Enabled Workflow Development

  • Use tools like Copilot/ChatGPT to accelerate workflow development
  • Build repeatable prompt frameworks or agent-based workflows
  • Integrate AI in controlled, scalable, production-ready ways

5. Documentation & Systems Structuring

  • Create structured documentation (process flows, logic, test results, user guides)
  • Maintain tracking of bugs, enhancements, and improvements
  • Ensure solutions are maintainable by others

6. Training, Communication & Change Management (Critical)

  • Train internal teams on new tools and processes
  • Translate technical solutions into simple, actionable guidance
  • Drive adoption across engineering and project teams
  • Act as a bridge between technical developers and end users

Required Skillset & Experience

  • Strong hands-on SQL experience (queries, validation, structured logic)
  • Proven experience automating real-world workflows
  • Experience owning and maintaining systems over time
  • Practical use of AI tools for workflow execution (not beginner-level)
  • Strong documentation and communication capabilities
  • Ability to teach, train, and drive adoption
    ย

Preferred Background

  • Degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering or similar
  • Exposure to engineering, design, construction, or EPC workflows
  • Experience with CAD-related systems or engineering datasets
  • Python or low-code automation tools (nice to have)

ย

Candidate Profile

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong ownership mindset
  • Comfortable in unstructured, evolving environments
  • Fast learner across multiple domains
  • Execution-focused (not just conceptual)
