Audio Recording Engineer
Job Description
Job Summary
The Audio Recording Engineer position will have the goal of creating high-quality recordings for concerts and recitals performed by the music department and guest artists within Christ Chapel, McNamara Rehearsal Hall and Conrad Recital Hall. Concerts include choral, orchestral, jazz, chamber & wind ensembles, percussion and opera. When not assigned to a recording specific event, the AV team takes turns with live event coverage. We are seeking a well-rounded candidate that would be comfortable rotating in to manage the general AV needs for live non-recorded events as needed.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Operate and maintain sound recording equipment
  2. Record all major music department performances
  3. Compile and edit performance for the needs of the Hillsdale College AV department
  4. Train and guide student workers to assist with recording and live audio needs
  5. Provide quality customer service
  6. Previous orchestral recording experience required
  7. Knowledge of classical and sacred music
  8. Must work well under pressure, prioritize effectively, and be detail-oriented
  9. Set up, test, and tear down recording hardware, digital audio workstations (DAWs), cables, mics and monitors before and after performances.
  10. Deep understanding of room acoustics, spatial imaging, and the distinct frequency characteristics of acoustic instruments.
  11. Mastery of industry-standard DAWs (such as Pro Tools or Logic Pro)
  12. Consult with conductors, artistic directors, and performers to understand their creative vision and address specific audio needs for the venue.
  13. Manage live AV events as assigned. This involves communicating with the event requestor to confirm AV details, preparing the venue with necessary gear, creating documentation and scheduling setup and tear down times.
  14. Work alongside the student employee manager to train and support student teams in audio standards.
  15. Ability and willingness to travel occasionally for event productions throughout the year, and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  16. Able to operate genie and scissor lifts
  17. Be a supporter of the vision, mission, and principles of the College and the AV team.
  18. Having a good sense of humor, serving, and leading by example, and having fun along the way is foundational to long-term success with this team

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in audio engineering, recording arts or music is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years hands-on experience in recording or live sound required, alongside a portfolio of ensemble or orchestral recordings.
