What does an associate editor do?

An Associate Editor is responsible for supporting the editorial process at a publication or media outlet. Their tasks usually include reviewing submissions, editing articles for clarity and accuracy, coordinating with writers and contributors, and helping manage deadlines. Associate Editors often assist in shaping content strategy and may contribute their own writing as well. They work closely with senior editors to ensure the quality and consistency of published materials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate editor?

To excel as an Associate Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), style guides (like AP or Chicago), and editing software is typically required. Attention to detail, organization, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing deadlines and collaborating with writers. These abilities ensure content accuracy, quality, and timely publication in a fast-paced editorial environment.

What are some common challenges an associate editor might face when balancing multiple projects and deadlines?

Associate Editors often juggle several articles or publications at once, each with its own timeline and set of contributors. A common challenge is prioritizing tasks effectively to meet tight deadlines while maintaining editorial quality and accuracy. This role requires strong organizational skills and clear communication with writers, senior editors, and other team members to ensure everyone is aligned. Developing efficient workflows and being adaptable to sudden changes—such as urgent revisions or shifting editorial calendars—are essential for success in this fast-paced environment.

What is the difference between Associate Editor vs Copy Editor?

The Associate Editor often manages multiple projects and collaborates with writers, while the Copy Editor ensures the final text is polished and error-free.

Job Description/Summary:

Hawaii News Now is looking for a highly organized, creative, and experienced Lifestyle Producer to join our Emmy Award-winning team. This is a role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, loves video storytelling, and is exceptionally good at keeping a lot of moving pieces moving in the right direction.

The Lifestyle Producer will help produce some of Hawaii News Now’s most dynamic lifestyle programming, including HI Now Daily, Kitchen Scraps, station specials, and
special projects.

Duties/Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) the following:

Core Responsibilities:
• Produce daily lifestyle show, segments, and station specials from concept through execution
• Manage multiple stories, shoots, guests, deadlines, and production details simultaneously
• Write, edit, and build compelling multiplatform content
• Coordinate guests, hosts, videographers, editors, and other production team members
• Create and maintain rundowns, production schedules and show materials
• Anticipate production needs and solve problems before they impact the show
• Communicate clearly with the Executive Producer, production team and other departments
• Help keep projects organized, on schedule, and moving forward
• Work collaboratively with Sales and other departments when producing sponsored and client-driven content
• Maintain high editorial and production standards across every project
• Step into changing situations quickly and remain composed when plans shift
• Be willing to jump into whatever role the production needs, including floor directing, assisting with studio and field production, coordinating talent and guests,
troubleshooting or supporting teammates
• Contribute ideas and look for creative ways to make our shows and specials better

Qualifications/Requirements:

Our ideal candidate is a strong producer and natural organizer who works well with a team, communicates clearly, stays calm under pressure, and takes ownership from planning through execution. Just as important, we are looking for a true team player who is willing to jump in and play whatever role is needed to get the show on the air and make the product great.

What We Are Looking For:
• Previous television or video producing experience
• Exceptional organizational and time management skills
• Strong writing, storytelling, and production skills
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines without losing attention to detail
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Someone who takes initiative, follows through, and can be counted on
• Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills
• Ability to perform well under pressure in a deadline-driven environment
• A positive, team-focused approach and a willingness to pitch in wherever needed
• Experience with ENPS preferred
• Experience producing studio, field, or lifestyle programming is a plus

Success in This Role:
• Success means being someone the team can rely on.
• You are organized and prepared. You know what needs to happen next and help make sure it happens. You communicate early, keep track of details, and stay calm when the day changes unexpectedly.
• You are equally comfortable developing a great segment, building a rundown, coordinating a complicated shoot, floor directing a show, or jumping in to solve a last-minute production challenge.
• You understand that great television is a team effort and that sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply recognize what needs to be done and do it.
