Controls Engineer

Title: Controls Engineer

Location: Birmingham with 40% Travel

Salary: $75k - $125k - DOE

We are an industrial automation services firm focused on designing, programming, commissioning, and supporting control systems for manufacturing and industrial facilities. Our engineers work directly on real production equipment, owning projects end to end from concept and programming through startup and long term support.

We are adding a Controls Engineer to our team who is hands on, technically strong, and comfortable working both on the plant floor and at a programming workstation.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Design, program, test, and commission PLC based automation systems
  • Troubleshoot and support existing production equipment in live manufacturing environments
  • Develop and modify PLC logic, HMIs, and system architectures to improve uptime, safety, and throughput
  • Participate in on site startups, commissioning, and system debugging
  • Integrate VFDs, motors, sensors, safety systems, vision systems, and industrial networks
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, electricians, technicians, and customer teams
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, PLC and HMI programs, and system documentation
  • Support modernization and upgrades of legacy control systems

TECHNOLOGIES WE WORK WITH

  • PLCs: Allen Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) as a core platform; Siemens experience is a plus
  • Programming: Ladder Logic and Structured Text (experience with Python or C/C plus plus is a plus)
  • HMIs and SCADA: PanelView, WinCC, or similar platforms
  • Industrial Communication: Ethernet IP, Profinet, and related fieldbus networks
  • Drives and Motion: VFDs, motor control, positioning, and material handling applications
  • Industrial Hardware: Sensors, safety devices, vision systems, barcode and RFID, instrumentation

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • 5 plus years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or PLC programming
  • Strong hands on troubleshooting skills in manufacturing or industrial environments
  • Ability to independently design, program, and commission control systems
  • Comfortable working directly on the plant floor during startups and breakdowns
  • Clear communicator who works well with technical and non technical stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel as needed for customer support and commissioning

PREFERRED BACKGROUND

  • Experience in automotive, manufacturing, or heavy industrial facilities
  • Exposure to machine vision, safety PLCs, or advanced sensor integration
  • Familiarity with upgrading or standardizing legacy systems
  • Background progressing from maintenance or technician roles into controls engineering

EDUCATION

  • Associate or Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, or equivalent hands on experience
