Job Opportunity: Program Director for Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency

We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative physician educator to take on the role of Program Director for our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. This position will involve working alongside an Associate Program Director, a program manager, and dedicated faculty members to enhance resident recruitment, elevate educational standards, and prepare future obstetricians and gynecologists.

This full-time role consists of a 50% commitment to program leadership and 50% to clinical practice, along with an academic appointment at a prestigious medical school, with the rank determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate.

About the Residency Program

Our ACGME-accredited OB/GYN Residency Program is dedicated to cultivating exceptional clinicians, patient advocates, critical thinkers, educators, and lifelong learners. Supported by a multidisciplinary educational leadership team, full-time faculty, and community physicians, the program currently accommodates 20 residents.

As Maine's tertiary referral center, we provide residents with extensive exposure to both routine and complex obstetric and gynecologic care across various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and subspecialty environments.

Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology or a related subspecialty.
  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
  • Teach and supervise residents and medical students in clinical environments.
  • Exemplify clinical excellence, professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, and sound clinical judgment.
  • Participate in departmental call and service coverage consistent with the agreed-upon clinical FTE.
  • Ensure ongoing clinical competence and engage in professional development.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree, or an equivalent medical qualification.
  • Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Current certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in Maine.
  • Eligibility for medical staff privileges at our institution.
  • A minimum of three years of documented educational or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Demonstrated ongoing clinical activity in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising residents or fellows.
  • A strong commitment to professionalism, educational excellence, and high-quality patient care.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a residency program director, associate program director, or other significant educational leadership roles.
  • Formal training or advanced professional development in medical education, leadership, quality improvement, or healthcare administration.
  • Experience with competency-based assessment and ACGME Milestones.
  • Proven success in resident recruitment and selection.
  • Experience in developing or implementing innovative curricula.
  • A record of scholarship in clinical medicine, medical education, research, or quality improvement.
  • Experience mentoring residents and faculty.
  • Academic achievements that support appointment at the associate professor or professor level.
  • Understanding of the healthcare needs of rural and underserved communities.
  • Experience leading change within a complex academic health system.

Our Obstetrics and Gynecology department comprises over 40 employed physicians and 20 advanced practice providers. Established in 1976, our residency program has a rich history of training the OB/GYN workforce in Maine, supporting five residents annually.

As Maine's largest tertiary-care and academic medical center, we have approximately 929 licensed beds and facilitate around 3,600 births each year. Our institution serves as the hub for subspecialty OB/GYN care, including maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, complex family planning, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
