Position Summary:ย The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing a broad range of accounting and financial operations functions in support of the organization's mission. Working in a collaborative environment, this position partners closely with Finance team members and program leadership to achieve the organizationโ€™s financial goals, maintain accurate financial reporting, and ensure effective stewardship of resources.


SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Play a key role in supporting the month-end and year-end close processes, including, though not limited to, preparing and recording journal entries for prepaids, allocations, intercompany transactions, and accruals.
  • Maintain general ledger account reconciliations and supporting documentation accurately and in a timely manner, such as occupancy square footage, right-of-use (ROU) leases, and fixed assets schedules.
  • Reconcile bank, investment, and endowment accounts; research and resolve variances; and ensure related balances, activity, and general ledger entries are accurate.
  • Support finance-related pre-award and post-award grant functions, including maintaining organized electronic grant and contract files, funding trackers, and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA).
  • Collaborate with Finance team members and program leadership to analyze financial activity and support the appropriate, timely use of grant and other funding sources.
  • Support the annual financial statement audits, other audits, and regulatory filings, including preparing information for annual Form 990 filings for the organization's multiple entities.
  • Assist with the preparation, implementation, monitoring, and analysis of the annual operating budget.
  • Assist in maintaining the chart of accounts and ensuring the ongoing integrity of the general ledger.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives, technology enhancements, and the implementation of accounting best practices.
  • Participate in and, as appropriate, lead special projects, process improvement initiatives, and other assignments.
  • Cross-train with Finance team members and provide coverage during absences; coordinate leave schedules to ensure continuous departmental coverage; and mentor junior accounting staff by providing guidance, training, and technical expertise.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA or CPA eligibility preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and financial management.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and FASB accounting standards and the ability to apply them in a nonprofit environment.
  • Experience with automated accounting systems; experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) or similar ERP systems preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel strongly preferred; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook required. Experience with budgeting, electronic billing, and data management systems is a plus.
  • Ability to manage accounting functions within a complex organizational structure with multiple entities, funding sources, and revenue streams.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to successfully navigate competing priorities while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to adjust priorities as organizational needs evolve.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build positive working relationships across the organization.
Physical Requirements:ย Employees in this position must have the ability to:
  • Travel between office locations, including navigating walkways, stairs, and elevators as needed.
  • Lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and in writing.
