As a high-performing elementary district, we serve our community across two distinct schools: Gilead Hill School (320 PreK to Grade 2 students) and Hebron Elementary School (375 Grade 3 to Grade 6 students). Assistant Principal Job Description
General:
Provide administrative and staff/student assistance of a confidential, complex and responsible nature to run the day-to-day operations of the school; interact with teachers and other school staff, students, parents/guardians, central office staff and the public; perform and/or supervise matters related to student assistance and support; school management and communication functions; provides leadership in the area of school culture and climate; supervise and evaluate certified and non-certified staff. Performs administrative leadership and oversight for Preschool (GHS) or district STEAMS Programming (HES).
This position is a 205-day position within the Hebron Administrators' Association in accordance with the HAA contract.
Supervision/Evaluation: Receives general supervision and performance evaluation from the Superintendent of Schools and the Principal of Schools.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Lead the day-to-day operations of the school
  2. Maintain the standards of student conduct; determine appropriate disciplinary procedures and practices in accordance with Federal, State of Connecticut and District policies and procedures
  3. Lead culture and climate work at the building level in collaboration with the Principal of Schools and Director of Educational Services
  4. Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive social emotional learning curriculum
  5. Act as the Safe School Climate Specialist and serves on the district Wellness, Safe School Climate, and Safety and Security committees
  6. Lead the development and implementation of systems to monitor and improve student attendance to address student attendance concerns
  7. Lead the development and implementation of school security and safety practices consistent with district security plans and protocols; ensure that school safety drills are held as required
  8. Provide direction, guidance and supervision at the school level to the embedded School Resource Officer (SRO) in collaboration with the Connecticut State Police and Town officials
  9. Provide routine classroom support to students and staff
  10. Supervise and evaluate certified and non-certified staff
  11. Participate in recruiting, screening, interviewing, and assignment of school staff
  12. Co-Lead the development and implementation of high-quality professional development program and for staff in collaboration with the Principal of Schools
  13. Conduct staff meeting to foster communication and ensure that direction, guidance and support is provided to staff
  14. In collaboration with the Director of Educational Services assist as appropriate in the oversight of delivery of special education and pupil services for students; facilitate/participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings when needed
  15. Lead school/student recognition programs
  16. Develop, implement, and participate in after-school/evening activities to foster student enrichment and family engagement along with other community or family-led activities to support positive school-home-community partnerships in collaboration with the Principal of Schools
  17. Assist in the annual budget process and oversight of approved school budgets
  18. Implement Board of Education policies and administrative procedures
  19. Supervise the preparation and submission of required reports and data collection, adhering to all deadlines
  20. Ensure effective communication among all stakeholders within the school, district and broader community
  21. Keep the Principal of Schools and the Superintendent of Schools well informed on all programs, events and activities within the schools
  22. Serve as a member of the district leadership team and provide input and reaction to educational matters and problems affecting the district
  23. Assumes other responsibilities as designated by the Superintendent of Schools

Supporting Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Assist in leading building-based student intervention process; collaborating with teachers to design and monitor appropriate intervention programs and a system to maintain accurate records for individual students' progress/outcomes
  2. Assist in facilitation of grade level meetings, data team meetings and other meetings related to curriculum and instructional initiatives especially as it relates to student behavior, social-emotional supports, and attendance
  3. Work with the Principal of Schools, Reading/Math Specialists, Interventionists, and Curriculum and Instruction Specialist to monitor the implementation of student support systems and student outcomes (i.e., academic and social/emotional/behavioral)

Qualifications:
* Master's Degree required; Post-Master's Certificate preferred
  • Current 092 Connecticut Certification required
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience, intermediate grades preferred
  • Evidence of prior leadership experience with an impact on teacher and student performance
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters related to students and staff
  • Ability to reconcile differences during conflict situations
  • Ability to work with and contribute to a team
  • Ability to compose, edit and comprehend written reports and technical professional material
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations
