Job description

Job Summary
The Assistant Nurse Manager provides leadership and clinical oversight for a designated patient care unit. This position supports the Nurse Director in managing daily operations, supervising nursing staff, and ensuring high-quality patient care in accordance with Butler Hospital policies, ANA Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and regulatory requirements. The role includes direct patient care responsibilities, staff development, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
Service Standards
  • Consistently adhere to Butler Hospital service standards, including caring attitude, professionalism, confidentiality, and safety practices.

Unit Management
  • Oversee daily operations of the unit.
  • Act as a resource for clinical expertise and provide direct patient care as needed.
  • Supervise, teach, and evaluate nursing staff, mental health workers, intake coordinators, students, and volunteers.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of nursing care in medical records.
  • Promote a cooperative team environment and intervene to resolve unit issues.

Leadership
  • Assist in hiring, orientation, and in-service education for staff.
  • Monitor compliance with standards of care and develop corrective plans as needed.
  • Maintain positive relationships with providers, patients, families, and staff.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement activities.

Professional Development
  • Maintain current RN licensure and CPR certification.
  • Participate in continuing education, unit meetings, and professional organizations.
  • Stay informed on current nursing practices and regulatory requirements.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree Required.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 Years of experience.
  • Minimum of four years of psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
  • One year of medical nursing experience preferred.
  • At least one year in a nursing leadership role preferred.
  • Current Rhode Island Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Strong clinical knowledge of psychiatric and mental health nursing standards.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills, including staff development and evaluation.
  • Ability to manage crises and adapt to rapid changes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of JCAHO requirements and hospital policies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism under stress.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
