Job description

The Town of Scarborough is seeking a full-time Assistant Operations Supervisor within the Public Works Department. This is a technically advanced outside operations position. An employee of this class is able to supervise staff in the completion of operations and maintenance of projects assigned by the Operations Supervisor. This position requires technical ability in the field of construction and supervision. The ability to operate all types of equipment and carry out assignments of higher responsibility with relative ease is critical.  Duties will include: assisting the Operations Supervisor in the supervision of the operations staff and winter operations; the repair of streets and all associated infrastructure; the maintenance and operation of Town cemeteries and beaches; inspecting work to ensure conformance with engineering specifications and standards; and performing record keeping and administrative tasks related to daily operations.

Position requirements: Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in street, sidewalk, and storm drain maintenance and construction as well as knowledge in the operation of construction equipment such as trucks and front-end loaders used in road construction work, including the ability to supervise and direct the activities of employees engaged in the operation of such equipment.  Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment physical is required to ensure candidates have the ability, physical strength, and agility sufficient to perform all assignments of the job description. Must possess a valid State of Maine Class B' or Class A' operator's license. Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent. Desirable experience includes a background in highway maintenance, road repairs, general labor, paving, snow plowing, facilities, landscaping, construction, safety, equipment operations, general mechanics, asset inspection, and/or experience with a Town, government, or municipal organization as a Foreman managing a highway crew. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the Town.
