At Ports America, the Assistant Operations Manager - Cruise is responsible for the effective planning, execution and supervision of the duties associated with terminal operations and staff. This includes ensuring efficient, safe and productive operations for assigned customers, terminal area and cargo type and to meet the financial goals and objectives.
This role is responsible for providing exceptional customer service for all customers.
Essential Duties:
  • Effectively supervise and direct the work activities of management peers, labor, foreman and other personnel; ensuring, performance expectations and customer needs are met.
  • Develop short range business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives while operating within approved fiscal budget.
  • Ensure customer needs are understood and met.
  • Work cohesively with customers, vendors, port officials, union labor, and all other entities to meet deadlines and provide exceptional customer service for cruise passengers and cruise lines.
  • Determine the amount of labor needed for each day and ensures labor is order appropriately for your assigned Department or Site.
  • Make decisions affecting overtime cost and general expenditures and ensures they are made in the best interest of our company and customers.
  • Determine additional staffing / labor needs and contact union hall in advance, ensuring cost-effective staffing and availability.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy and make appropriate changes as needed and approve payrolls for the shift supervised.
  • Identify areas of cost reduction and leads and supports improvement initiatives.
  • Actively champion and manage the company's Safety program ensuring that all labor and staff comply with accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures and provide input and solutions.
  • Review Safety trends for your area and incorporates corrective measures.
  • Develop, review and approve efficient operational plans and coordinates with M&R, labor and customers.
  • Work closely with M&R/Terminal Departments to ensure the appropriate equipment allocation meets operational demands.
  • Maintain positive relations with labor and union officials and that the Collective Bargaining Agreements associated to your workforce are understood and followed.
  • Counsel, discipline and/or terminate Foremen and Supervisory Clerks when necessary.
  • Ensure union leadership, foreman and clerks enforce collective bargaining agreements and work in the best interest of the company.
  • Advise Labor Relations team on investigative matters and assist in adjudicating all complaints filed through Labor Relations committees up to arbitration.
  • Ensure union leadership counsels, disciplines and terminates union staff when necessary.
  • Responsible for attending Labor Relation Committees when requested for grievances filed and expected to follow up on decisions and inform peers and direct managers of outcome.
  • Provide regular training and feed-back to labor and management staff.
  • Inform upper Management of training identified that would enhance your skills.
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection process for steady labor.
  • Communicate areas of accountability and performance expectations to labor and management staff.
  • Develop, communicate, maintain and improve operating and administrative procedures (consistent with area procedures and objectives) designed to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.
  • Ensure that all company policies, procedures and controls are followed and that required reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff, customers and other designated personnel, and that appropriate staff and labor have a full understanding of these procedures.
  • Travels to other Sites to provide stevedore and terminal operations support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience with computerized operating systems
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
  • Obtain and maintain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security
  • Valid US Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience working in management
  • Demonstrated leadership managing union contracts and union labor.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to safety and accident prevention, safety codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.
  • Experience with terminal operations and cargo stowage
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and interpretation of intent, spirit, and terms of contract to apply on the job.
  • Experience with federal and state OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Working knowledge and ability to use computer for data input, mining, analysis, visualization and trend identification
  • Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience investigating and analyzing results.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management
  • Experience planning and organizing projects in fast paced environment.

Working Conditions:
  • Support operations with all work shifts, days, nights, weekends, holidays.
  • Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift
  • Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions
  • Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment
  • Drive at least 50% of the time
  • Lift, push, and or pull up to 30lbs
