Are you a Librarian, looking for your next development opportunity? The Upper King William Branch within King William County Library System, is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative Assistant Director to join our team! 

Oversee the day-to day-operations of a small library system under the direction of the Library Director. The Assistant Director supports the LS&S mission, vision, and values through exceptional leadership and dedicated patron focus. This position is responsible for the effective and efficient implementation of library system procedures, as well as for developing and overseeing a comprehensive approach to library programming and community outreach. The Assistant Director will lead a team of library staff who are committed to creating a thriving library in the heart of their community.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Lead the Library programming and outreach team, including facilitation of regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Prioritize and propose programming and outreach priorities for Director approval.
  • Create and distribute programming and outreach schedule.
  • Lead, coordinate, assign, and facilitate all library promotions, including fliers, calendars, social media, and website.
  • Develop new and unique ways to improve operations of the library and to create new opportunities
  • Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of internal and external clients to meet or exceed their expectations within the organizational parameters
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness
  • Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the organization
  • Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement actions plans, and evaluate the process and results
  • Assesses options and actions based on trends and conditions in the environment, and the vision and values of the organization
  • Work closely with Library Director to plan, implement and promote the library strategic plan
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • MLS/MLIS required
  • One year of public library experience required
  • One to three years supervisory experience is required
  • Communicate Effectively: Speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
  • Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and/or tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
  • Understand ethical behavior and business practices, and ensure that own behavior and the behavior of others is consistent with these standards and aligns with the values of the organization

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
