Brief Description of Duties
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA DAVID A. CLARKE SCHOOL OF LAW (UDC LAW) seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member to join our dynamic and missiondriven community in the 2026-2027 academic year. We are looking broadly for candidates, but welcome applications from aspiring faculty and junior lateral candidates interested in teaching some or all of the following courses: Property Law, Family Law, and Wills, Trusts, and Estates. Candidates must have a J.D. degree and demonstrate high scholarly distinction or promise and a commitment to teaching excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Â Teach assigned School of Law courses in the JD program.
- Â Maintain proficiency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.
- Â Research, write, and publish scholarly output in academic or professional journals, books, media outlets, and/or electronic media in a manner that is consistent with the direction of the academic program.
- Â Keep abreast of developments in the relevant instructional areas by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences to enhance academic performance.
- Â Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, papers, and exams using rubrics and other student-centered approaches.
- Â Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
- Â Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.
- Â Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
- Â Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and scholarship issues.
- Â Participate in writing grant proposals, as appropriate, to procure external research funding.
- Â Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program matters, and academic issues.
- Â Participate in student recruitment and placement activities.
Minimum Job Requirements
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LAW
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor of Law shall have:
- An earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state.
- The potential for teaching excellence and scholarly growth; and
- Demonstrated professional competence in the relevant field and the potential for professional growth.
An initial appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor of Law shall be without tenure and for a period of not more than three years.
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF LAW
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor of Law shall have:
- An earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of scholarship;
- Demonstrated professional competence in the relevant field, demonstrated professional attainment, and the potential for continued professional growth; and
- At least three years of full-time teaching experience at an accredited law school.
The faculty acknowledges that the Dean may recognize and allow the substitution of appropriate professional experience and achievement if the candidate has less teaching experience than that required above, provided that the candidate demonstrates potential for effective teaching.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
