Description
Mission Contribution: The Assistant Store Manager supports the leadership and management of daily operations for the assigned retail store(s). This role contributes to profitability, operational efficiency, and adherence to company standards while fostering training and development opportunities for team members. The Assistant Store Manager collaborates with the Store Manager and other teams to drive sales growth, deliver world-class customer service, and achieve organizational objectives.
Summary: Under the general supervision of the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager helps oversee the daily operations of the assigned retail store(s), ensuring efficient performance, profitability, and alignment with company goals. This includes assisting with staff management, maintaining compliance with policies and procedures, and promoting a welcoming and productive environment for customers and employees. Work is performed with latitude for independent judgment and action within the framework of Goodwill's policies and procedures.
Essential Functions:
  1. Support retail operations to achieve or exceed net income goals by assisting in maximizing production output, driving revenue, and maintaining expense control under the direction of the Store Manager.
  2. Assist in managing labor costs effectively by aligning staffing levels with sales fluctuations, adhering to budget expectations or better, and ensuring compliance with Goodwill policies and procedures.
  3. Ensure proper handling and processing of donations, demonstrating stewardship and maximizing production flow to meet assigned goals, in accordance with organizational standards.
  4. Complete all assigned tasks accurately and on time, including cash handling, safety program requirements, incident and accident reporting, payroll, supply orders, and scheduling, to align with operational goals and support the Store Manager's directives.
  5. Promote and ensure world-class customer service is delivered by all team members to drive revenue and achieve budgeted sales and net income goals.
  6. Support the Store Manager in leading store operations and, where applicable, assist with multi-location management by contributing to consistent achievement of sales, production, and operational goals across multiple sites.
  7. Demonstrate leadership with a balance of humility and determination, modeling Goodwill's leadership principles as defined by Level V Leadership (Good to Great by Jim Collins).
  8. Act as a coach leader, supporting team members to reach their full potential by providing guidance, mentorship, and encouragement.
  9. Assist with interviewing, making hiring recommendations, onboarding, and supporting recruitment efforts to attract and retain top talent under the guidance of the Store Manager.
  10. Provide input into performance evaluations and assist with conducting reviews to offer constructive feedback, set goals for improvement, and foster professional development.
  11. Document coaching and assist in implementing corrective actions, identifying performance issues, supporting improvement plans, and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
  12. Ensure team members complete training within established timelines, equipping them to meet organizational goals while contributing to succession planning and team success.
  13. Help foster a positive workplace culture by encouraging team morale, facilitating training, and holding team members accountable to Goodwill's policies and expectations.
  14. Lead by example to maintain brand standards, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for customers, donors, and team members.
  15. Model effective leadership that empowers team members to achieve production and operational goals.
  16. Attend required meetings and assist in ensuring team participation, actively contributing to discussions that drive business outcomes.
  17. Demonstrate decision-making and behavior aligned with Goodwill's Core Values: Serve, Mentor, Include, Lead, and Excel.
  18. Participate in training sessions, meetings, and company-related events as required.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  20. Adhere to all Goodwill policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to effectively read, write, and create reports and professional business correspondence.
  • Effective verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and respond to questions from supervisors, team members, and customers.
  • Basic mathematic skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, team members, and diverse internal and external customers.
  • Positive and friendly attitude, contributing to a collaborative work environment and enhancing team morale.

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Experience:
  • Minimum of one year of management/supervisory experience in a business (retail) setting.
  • Must be able to successfully complete any assigned Goodwill training within the required period of time upon employment.
  • Ability to complete and maintain first aid and CPR certification.

Special Requirements:
  • Must provide a cell phone for specified work responsibilities, including the use of a phone-based application for authentication.
  • Flexible availability to meet the business needs required, which can include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Must be available to open the store at least twice per week and close the store at least twice per week, ensuring all tasks are completed on time. This includes a minimum of four days per week covering both opening and closing responsibilities.
