Seasonal Resource Foreman

Idaho's Forest Health Program
The Idaho Department of Lands Forest Health Program is seeking an individual to assist with seasonal field work in 2026. They will deploy, monitor, and retrieve pheromone-baited traps for spongy moth (formerly known as gypsy moth), Douglas-fir tussock moth, bark beetles, and wood borers. They may also assist with other projects as needed.
This position is the primary insect trapper for the insect monitoring projects conducted during the summer of 2026 from May to October, based out of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, please visit our website: https://www.idl.idaho.gov/

Resource Foreman
A Resource Foreman is an individual trained in resource management. May supervise and train Resource Aide I and Resource Aide II personnel in the preparation of resource management projects by using knowledge of forest measurement technology, dendrology, pathology, and entomology. Maintains accurate documentation and records while performing the lead role.
Pay: Starting rate is $18.57 per hour, depending on experience.
Example of Job Duties:
  • Conduct insect trapping projects, including constructing, deploying, and picking up pheromone-baited traps to monitor for Douglas-fir tussock moth, spongy moth, invasive bark beetles and woodborers, and other projects as assigned.
  • Communicate with landowners to obtain trapping access when needed.
  • Travel across Idaho for insect trapping and field work while using Field Maps to navigate and enter data.
  • Conduct larval (caterpillar) surveys, cocoon surveys, and egg mass surveys as needed.
  • Identify and count insects in traps, record data, and communicate with supervisor.
  • Assist IDL entomologists and pathologist in their duties as needed.
  • Organize, clean, and maintain field supplies, lab equipment, and field vehicles.
  • Assist with field days and trainings, organize and prepare samples and materials.
  • Ground check aerial survey damage area polygons.
  • Gather and compile data, and work independently on specialized projects.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) seasons previous experience in a resource related field OR one (1) season previous experience and two (2) years of college education in a resource related field.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and have the ability to navigate 4-wheel drive forest roads.
  • Ability to ensure traps are deployed and picked up in a timely manner according to a preset schedule, and ability to commit to duration of field season (mid to late-May through mid-October).
  • Ability to independently prepare for field work and work alone in the field, including critical thinking and troubleshooting when in the field.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time, including some hiking in steep terrain.
  • Willingness to work with small amounts of insecticides and insect pheromones.
  • Ability to use radio, aerial photos, maps, surveying equipment, timber marking and cruising equipment.
  • Must be able to keep accurate and legible notes and project records.
  • Good knowledge of computer processing and use, GIS/GPS interface, and data recording.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Desired Qualifications
  • Ability to use Field Maps on tablets/phone to navigate and record data.
  • Willingness to learn to identify different insects, and document and report findings.

Additional Information
This position will be based out of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, but will travel throughout northern Idaho. When overnight travel is required, a daily per diem will be provided and hotel expenses will be covered. Medical, Dental, Vision, and Retirement benefits are included with this position. Housing is not provided for this position. Working some of the season based out of Moscow, Idaho may be considered depending on applicant.
