Job description

Position Overview

Power your future with Qualus in our T&D Canada business as a Lead Distribution Engineer. This opportunity is hybrid and can be based in Vancouver, BC (preferred), Calgary, AB, Saskatoon, SK, or Oakville, ON. This role is responsible for leading and supporting distribution electrical engineering projects, defining scopes of work, performing engineering calculations, and developing detailed design drawings. The engineer will oversee overhead and underground distribution projects from feasibility to construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities
  • Engineer distribution electrical projects through the entire project lifecycle: from conceptual and feasibility, though detailed design, to construction and service
  • Lead or support overhead and underground distribution engineering projects defining scopes of work, completing cost estimates, performing engineering calculations, interconnection studies and developing detailed design drawings
  • Support the preparation of technical specifications, tender documents, and technical reports.
  • Provide construction support and overall project engineering coordination.
  • Respond to information requests during construction and complete project documentation including preparation of record drawings
  • Lead a team of engineers and designers to successfully deliver a portfolio of projects
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with other design disciplines and external stakeholders and assist team leads and managers
  • Mentor and guide junior staff
  • Travel and visit project sites during design and construction
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering from a recognized university
  • Professional Engineering Designation or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in the province of British Columbia
  • 5+ years of overhead and underground distribution engineering experience serving utilities in North America
  • Knowledge of CSA/IEC/NESC Standards and major utility standards (BC Hydro, Fortis, ENMAX, ATCO, SaskPower; more specifically BC Hydro project experience)
  • Proficiency in electrical design, including selection and installation of conductors, insulators, switchgear, circuit breakers, and other distribution equipment
  • Experience with smart infrastructure equipment, such as automatic feeder switches, remote sensing switching, and capacitor banks
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to apply sound engineering judgment to resolve technical issues
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for high-profile projects
  • Proven experience in leading a team of engineers and designers to deliver projects
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

Preferred Experience: 

  • Knowledge of structural, civil, and geotechnical aspects of distribution engineering
  • Experience with PLS-CADD and/or Spida-Calc for overhead systems design
  • Experience with interconnecting distributed energy resources (DERs) and performing interconnection studies
  • Experience in power system analysis (voltage drop, equipment loading, steady-state voltage rise, etc.) using CYME, ETAP, EasyPower, SKM
  • Experience with substation and transmission projects
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and GIS applications
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and leading the technical scope of small and large projects
  • Experience working in both Canada and the U.S. for local utility companies
  • Background in a utility or consulting environment, managing multiple projects with competing priorities
