The Assistant Director of Hospice is a rare leadership opportunity to shape the full hospice experience-blending exceptional clinical care with family-centered support. This role partners closely with the Director of Hospice, Nurse Managers, and the Team Lead of Family Services to unite nursing and Family Services into one cohesive, compassionate vision for patients, families, and staff. JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Hospice is responsible for the leadership and management of daily operations across the Hospice Home and Hospice Partners programs. This role ensures the consistent delivery of high-quality patient care while maintaining full compliance with clinical protocols, administrative policies, and applicable regulatory standards. The Assistant Director plays a critical role in operational oversight, staff coordination, and the advancement of strategic initiatives that support excellence in hospice care.
Major Job Responsibilities
  1. Contribute to the development and execution of strategic and operational plans for clinical services.
  2. Serve as a professional role model and mentor, fostering a positive response to change and supporting staff through transitions.
  3. Act as a change agent to promote effective communication and alignment with the organization's mission.
  4. Champion workforce diversity and cultivate an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives.
  5. Maintain accurate program records, reports, and statistics to ensure compliance with DHCH policies, procedures, quality initiatives, safety standards, and regulatory requirements; communicate expectations and hold staff accountable.
  6. Promote a professional practice model that encourages staff engagement in the development of clinical standards, grounded in collaboration, evidence-based practice, and current trends.
  7. Engage with patients and families to ensure care delivery aligns with their expectations and needs.
  8. Ensure staff participation in programmatic and organizational councils and committees.
  9. Assess, coach, and evaluate staff performance and clinical practice levels.
  10. Develop and support clinical development programs that foster growth from novice to expert, enhancing patient care and staff satisfaction.
  11. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and procedures aimed at improving operational efficiency; coordinate quality control and performance improvement activities.
  12. Provide oversight for the integration and application of the Duke Quality System.
  13. Coordinate staff activities with other DHCH departments to ensure effective and efficient operations, including the execution of care plans, treatments, and clinical pathways.
  14. Ensure complete and accurate patient care documentation in accordance with DHCH standards and regulatory guidelines.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education:
  • Work requires completion of an accredited Bachelor's degree in a clinical field such as Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy or a related field.

Experience:
  • Work requires a minimum of five years of clinical experience, including supervisory experience in hospice and home-based care.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • Current North Carolina licensure or ability to obtain as required by professional discipline.
  • Valid NC Driver's License
  • Membership and participation in professional societies and organizations is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of homecare industry. Maintains knowledge by reviewing literature and attending in-services, seminars, and conferences.
  • Exhibits effective leadership and management in health care organizations.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge, understanding and ability to work with multi-health systems.
  • Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid regulations, JCAHO, and DFS standards.
  • Computer skills including Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills and organizational/time- management skills.
