Job description

Assistant Crane Operator

The Assistant Crane Operator is responsible for working with the Roustabout crews in their daily duties as well as assisting with any crane and lifting operations given to them by the Crane Operators. They are in a "senior" Roustabout position helping the crane operator to carry out operations as per policies and procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for safety as well as that of the crew.
  • Under the direction of the Crane Operator, inspects and trains personnel to inspect rig safety apparatus and equipment for meeting company and industry regulations.
  • Follows correct lock-out, tag-out procedures.
  • Assures all lifts are within load limits of equipment and are correctly rigged.
  • Assures lifting gear is properly color coded prior to use.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of new Roustabouts regarding helicopter safety, high noise area safety, safety appliance use, lifeboat assignment, general alarm, etc.
  • In the absence of the Crane Operator, operates crane equipment to hoist materials and equipment onto the rig and onto ocean vessels.
  • Assists in organizing, planning, and monitoring the work of Roustabout personnel.
  • Performs tasks assigned by Crane Operator during rig moving procedures.
  • Assists with inspection of slings, cables, straps and the crane structure prior to lifting operations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance as required to ensure safe and continual service of crane.
  • Supervises the cleaning and painting of the rig in the absence of the Crane Operator.
  • Ensures activities are conducted in compliance with the company Permit to Work system.
  • Responsible for compliance with the company policy, safety guidelines, and procedures, as well as that of the Roustabouts, that pertain to the Crane Operator's and Roustabout's job.
  • Remains in continual voice (radio) communication with Roustabouts while operating the crane.
  • Assists in maintaining up to date Crane record books.
  • Assists in training Roustabouts regarding proper methods of tying onto loads to be hoisted or moved and proper lifting techniques for carrying load by hand with emphasis on personal safety.
  • In the absence of the Crane Operator, confers with OIM and boat captain to assess if sea and weather conditions are safe for loading and unloading and are carried out within operating parameters of Valaris, the OIM, and regulatory bodies.
  • Follows correct lock-out, tag-out procedures.
  • Will be required to work over open water and at heights.
  • Responsible for housekeeping in his/her work and living area.
  • Attends and participates in all pre-tour, post tour, and weekly safety meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) years as a certified Crane Operator Assistant with prior offshore experience preferred. For rigs operated by BP the Crane Operator Assistant will need 1 year of experience.
  • Must meet the training and certification requirements which will vary by unit location according to local requirements and regulations. Specific unit requirements will be found in local job specification procedures and guidelines
  • Must have current Crane Operator certification
