Job description

OPENING FOR CRANE OPERATOR
There is an opening in the Allegany County Department of Public Works for a full-time Crane Operator.

This is an hourly position based on a 40-hour work week, seasonal 4-day work schedule with potential for overtime.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class operates a crane for bridge and highway repair, construction and maintenance projects and other public works activities. This class differs from that of a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator II due to the more complex nature of equipment operated requiring greater skill and knowledge along with increased responsibility to others. Additionally, incumbents are required to be eligible for a special license to operate and service equipment operated. The work is performed under direct supervision with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Operates crane to unload and load materials;
  • Performs regular inspections of crane;
  • Maintains daily log for crane;
  • Responsible for understanding the bearing capacity of soils to ensure safe support for the crane and loads to be lifted;
  • Reads load charts and determines safe loads and reach;
  • Responsible for ensuring loads lifted meet rigging procedures;
  • Responsible for accurately estimating and/or determining weights of picks;
  • Communicates with supervisors, engineering, operators, and others about crane operations and requirements;
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on crane and other equipment, such as changing oil, greasing, minor mechanical repairs, etc.;
  • Operates other specialized heavy equipment;
  • May transport equipment from one site to another;
  • Does related tasks in the building and maintenance of roadways, flood control dams, drainage ditches, and other construction projects;
  • May assist in training;
  • Does other related tasks as required.

FULL PERFORMANCES, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of crane operation; through knowledge of crane maintenance; thorough knowledge of safe crane operation and load rigging; thorough knowledge of rules and regulations regarding crane operation such as OSHA 1926, and ANSI Code 30.5; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of other specialized heavy equipment; ability to make minor repairs, good manual dexterity; good mechanical ability; good visual acuity; ability to follow oral and written instructions.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Three (3) years of satisfactory experience in the operation of specialized heavy motor equipment such as Crane, Backhoe, Excavator, Loader, etc.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Crane Operator Certification

    • New York State: NCCCO Certification
    • Outside of New York State and New York City: Certificate of Competence from DOL

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

    1. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License appropriate for class.
    2. Must pass drug screening prior to employment.
