Start your healthcare career with paid hand on training through UNC Health's Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program (MAAP)!
This full-time, 12-month program combines up to 2,000 hours of on-the-job trainingwith144 hours of online coursework to prepare participants for a career as a Certified Medical Assistant.
Apprentices will progress through three learning phases - Administrative Apprentice I, Basic Clinical Apprentice II, and Intermediate Clinical Apprentice III - while working in an outpatient clinic setting.
Upon successful completion, participants are eligible to take the NHA Medical Assistant Certification Exam and, once certified, may apply for a permanent Medical Assistant I, Certified position within UNC Health.
Application Process: Apply online from June 15th - June 20th
The Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program will start on August 3rd
To be eligible, candidates must:
  • Access to computer and internet for online coursework
  • Commitment to completing the 12-month program and obtaining certification
  • Intent to work at UNC Health as a Certified Medical Assistant for at least two years after completion

Summary:
This is an entry level position for an enrollee in the UNC Health Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program (MAAP). The medical assistant apprentice is an on-the-job training program designed to teach the new employee routine administrative and clinical skills in the outpatient clinic setting. The medical assistant apprentice will provide support to providers and other health care team members. Works under the supervision of an assigned journeymen, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor. The UNC Health MAAP is a training program approved by Apprenticeship NC. Employee must meet all terms of MAAP commitment agreement.
Responsibilities:
1. Performs rooming and/or intake process including vital signs, height, weight, and data collection related to patient's reason for visit.
2. Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history. Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies and preferred pharmacy.
3. Assists the provider as directed, during treatments, examinations and procedures. Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy. Administers medications under designated manager / supervisor.
4. Performs tests, for example EKG, eye exams, under designated manager / supervisor. Reviews the patient record to determine whether patient requires any routine health screenings.
5. Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure. Prepares, cleans, stocks and maintains exam and treatment rooms. Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
6. Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
7. Assists with patient registration, check in/check out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments. Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under designated manager / supervisor.
