Afterschool Assistant at Sid Jacobson JCC and Herricks School. Long Island, NY

  Position Summary

The Afterschool Assistant helps create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where children can learn, build relationships, and thrive. This role supports daily program activities, assists children with homework and social development, and contributes to a positive and inclusive After School experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build positive relationships with children through play, exploration, and age-appropriate activities

  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all participants

  • Support children with homework and daily routines as needed

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with families, staff, and school personnel

  • Assist in setting up and maintaining program spaces that support safety, engagement, and active supervision

  • Encourage positive behavior, self-esteem, and social development

  • Maintain active supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of all children at all times

  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and team collaboration opportunities

  • Complete all required OCFS trainings and compliance requirements

  • Support additional program needs and responsibilities as assigned


Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of experience working with children ages 5–12 preferred

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Must be willing to complete all required New York State background clearances

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout program spaces for extended periods

    • Ability to actively supervise children in classrooms, playgrounds, and activity areas

    • Ability to lift and carry supplies or equipment up to 25 pounds

    Work Environment

    • Indoor and outdoor program environments depending on daily activities and weather

    • Frequent interaction with children, families, staff, and school personnel

    • Active, fast-paced youth program setting


Compensation details: 18-20 Hourly Wage
