Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with physicians and nurses to provide quality health care to the patient.  Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant is responsible for the physical care of patients through professional nursing tasks of routine difficulty and directs routine activities of the nurses and physicians. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares patients for examinations.  Provides routine information related to medical treatments and procedures.
  • Measures and records vital signs.  Collects specimens when required.
  • Prepares exam rooms, selects and lays out medical supplies and maintains medical equipment.
  • Records and reports patient information.  Retrieves laboratory test results and patient files.
  • Escorts patients and visitors.
  • Performs services such as venapuncture, injections, EKG, X-Ray and PFT and basic lab tests.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Performs clerical functions related to medical activities and may coordinate patient referrals and verify insurance as a back up to receptionist as necessary.
  • May be required to change dressings, apply bandages, remove sutures administer CPR and other first aid procedures. 
  • Perform accurate, legal and ethical documentation at all times.  
  • Prepare and administer medications with physician authorizations.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
