Job description

We are looking for an experienced Construction Accountant to support project financial operations for a Long-term Contract position based in Bernalillo, New Mexico. This role is ideal for someone who understands the financial demands of construction projects and can keep cost records, billing activity, and budget performance accurate and organized. You will work closely with project teams and company leadership to maintain financial visibility across active jobs while helping ensure timely and accurate reporting.
Responsibilities:
• Manage project-level accounting activities, including cost tracking, purchasing support, payables, receivables, and client invoicing throughout the project lifecycle.
• Maintain accurate job cost records by recording labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor charges, and overhead expenses for each assignment.
• Review budgets against actual and committed spending, identify variances, and communicate cost concerns to project managers and leadership.
• Process vendor invoices with correct cost coding, issue and monitor purchase orders, and maintain documentation for change orders and retainage.
• Prepare and distribute progress billings, customer invoices, work-in-progress reporting, and cost-to-complete analyses to support project oversight.
• Reconcile project accounting details with the general ledger and assist with month-end close activities to ensure financial accuracy.
• Monitor outstanding customer balances, follow up on collections activity, and help resolve billing or payment discrepancies with clients and vendors.
• Partner with project managers, customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to address questions related to project costs, billing status, and profitability.
• Work alongside the retiring team member during the transition period to capture process knowledge and ensure continuity in construction accounting responsibilities.• Prior experience in construction accounting with a strong understanding of project-based financial processes.
• Proven knowledge of job costing, progress billing, invoicing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions.
• Ability to analyze budgets, committed costs, change orders, retainage, and project profitability with a high level of accuracy.
• Experience preparing reconciliations, work-in-progress reports, and cost-to-complete reporting for active projects.
• Strong cost analysis skills, including the ability to compare actual expenses against projected job budgets.
• Effective communication skills for collaborating with project managers, vendors, customers, and company leadership.
• High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven construction environment.
