Summary:
The ASI Wellness Director is a foundational role responsible for creating the first-ever comprehensive wellness program for Associated Students Inc., California State University, Fullerton (ASI). This position will permanently shift ASI and the university’s approach to well-being by establishing a new, holistic framework. The ASI Wellness Director will create and establish brand-new wellness programs, services, and facilities and hire wellness staff to implement those programs for the students of California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). The ASI Wellness Director, under the direction of the Assistant Executive Director Wellness and Recreation, is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and management of comprehensive ASI wellness programs designed to foster a holistic culture of well-being for the CSUF campus community, encompassing the 8 Dimensions of Wellness: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, intellectual, financial, and occupational. The primary focus of this position is centered on addressing students’ wellness needs by incorporating extensive outreach and direct engagement with students to co-create programs that are relevant and impactful. The ASI Wellness Director will collaborate with various campus departments (including the campus health, counseling centers and wellness-focused faculty), student organizations, healthcare providers, and community partners to create and promote a wide range of wellness initiatives. This position requires a dynamic and adaptive leader with a strong understanding of program development, building and leading a team, public health principles, current wellness trends, and college student development. The ASI Wellness Director will play a crucial role in creating a supportive and thriving campus environment that empowers individuals to achieve their full potential, particularly within the context of ASI's mission and goals. The Wellness Director’s initial focus will be on program creation and community engagement, and collaboration on construction of a brand-new wellness facility. Facility policies, staff hiring and management, and oversight of the new facility will be necessary as planning and construction milestones are achieved.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Holistic Program Development and Management:
• Pioneer and evaluate comprehensive wellness programs addressing the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, aligning with ASI strategic goals.
• Engage directly with students through surveys, focus groups, and informal conversations to understand their specific needs.
• Design and execute targeted wellness initiatives to address the specific needs of diverse student populations, faculty, and staff, with a focus on student engagement.
• Gather and use data from student leaders, students-at-large, employees, campus partners, and community members to create a robust wellness program for the organization.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of newly created programs, adjusting strategies as needed based on direct feedback and data.
Strategic Planning and Collaboration:
• Develop and implement a strategic wellness plan aligned with ASI's mission and goals, and the university's overall strategic plan.
• Collaborate with university departments (e.g., Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Divisions of Academic Affairs, Human Resources & Inclusive Excellence, and Student Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management) to integrate ASI wellness initiatives.
• Develop partnerships with student leaders, provide guidance, information, and support for the ASI Student Wellness Initiative.
• Work closely with student organizations to promote and support peer-led wellness initiatives.
• Conduct regular assessments of the campus community's health and wellness needs using surveys, focus groups, and data analysis, with a focus on student feedback.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of wellness programs and adjust strategies as needed, reporting to the Assistant Executive Director Wellness and Recreation.
Education and Outreach:
• Develop and disseminate wellness-related educational materials through various channels (e.g., website, social media, workshops, presentations), specifically promoting ASI wellness programs.
• Organize and facilitate health screenings, workshops, seminars, and campus-wide wellness events, with a focus on student participation and engagement.
• Promote awareness of campus wellness resources and services, particularly those provided by ASI.
Leadership and Supervision:
• Directly recruit, train, and supervise full-time staff employees within the wellness department to program and manage the in-development wellness center.
• Provide indirect supervision and guidance to student assistants working within ASI wellness programs.
• Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and peer educators, ensuring alignment with ASI policies and the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
• Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment within the ASI wellness department and with campus partners.
Facility Construction and Management:
• Collaborate with CSUF students, ASI Staff, and campus partners in the design and construction of updated ASI facilities and a brand-new wellness center.
• When the newly constructed facility comes online (est. 2029), oversee the operational management of the ASI wellness facility, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and effective environment for students.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
• Collect and analyze data to track wellness program outcomes and metrics, specifically for ASI programs.
• Prepare and present reports on wellness program activities and outcomes to the Chief of Organizational Operations, the ASI Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.
• Utilize data to inform program development and improvement, ensuring alignment with ASI strategic goals.
Policy and Procedure Development:
• Develop and implement wellness-related policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with ASI policies and relevant health and safety regulations.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures for the use and maintenance of the future wellness facility.
Individual Support:
• Provide individual wellness coaching or referrals to appropriate campus or community resources.
• Maintain current knowledge of health and wellness trends and best practices, ensuring relevance to the CSUF student population.
Supervisory Duties:
Directly Supervises:
• Future Wellness Center Staff (titles and duties to be determined by the ASI Wellness Director)
This role has the authority to perform or effectively recommend the following functions for the employees listed above:
• Make decisions on hiring, terminating, or effectively recommend such actions.
• Assigning work, designating tasks, or giving significant duties to employees using independent judgment and discretion.
• Reward or discipline employees, including issuing written warnings, or making recommendations for promotions or disciplinary action.
• Direct employees by deciding which employees will perform a task and the order in which tasks are completed using independent judgment and discretion and often considering the individual employee’s skills and aptitudes.
• Adjust employee grievances.
• Authority to transfer, suspend, lay off, or recall employees, which includes managing time off requests and leaves of absence.
• This role is held accountable for the performance of the employees they supervise and if employees under the Director’s supervision have performance failures, that may lead to a negative impact on the Director’s employment with ASI
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field
• 5+ years of relevant experience in managing wellness programs and supervising full-time staff will be accepted with an applicable Bachelor’s degree.
• 2+ years supervising full-time staff (includes recruitment, performance, and discipline).
• Relevant experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation within higher education student-focused organizations.
Preferred Education and Experience Requirements:
• Master's degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field preferred
• Experience in college or university setting preferred
Certifications:
• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills, specifically within a student organization context and a focus on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, tailored to a university student population.
• Knowledge of college student development theory and practice, with a focus on wellness.
• Understanding of public health principles and best practices relevant to a college campus.
• Ability to motivate and inspire others, particularly students.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and wellness software tools.
