What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 RPGLE Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AS400 RPGLE Developer, you need strong programming skills in RPG (Report Program Generator), CL (Control Language), and a solid understanding of IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, often supported by relevant IT degrees or certifications. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer for i, DB2 databases, and source control systems is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure robust application development, smooth system integration, and efficient collaboration with business users and IT teams.

What are some common challenges faced by AS400 RPGLE developers when working on legacy systems?

AS400 RPGLE developers often encounter challenges such as understanding and maintaining large, complex codebases written by previous teams, limited documentation, and integrating older systems with modern technologies. Debugging and optimizing legacy RPGLE code can be time-consuming, especially when dealing with outdated coding standards or minimal modularization. However, these challenges also provide valuable learning experiences and opportunities to modernize systems, which can enhance your technical skills and make you a key asset to your team.

What is an AS400 RPGLE developer?

An AS400 RPGLE developer is a programmer who specializes in developing, maintaining, and modifying software applications on the IBM AS/400 (now IBM i) platform, using the RPG IV (RPGLE) programming language.
