What is an IBM RPG developer?

An IBM RPG developer is a software professional who specializes in programming with RPG (Report Program Generator), a high-level programming language primarily used on IBM midrange systems like AS/400 (now IBM i). RPG developers create, maintain, and update business applications critical to many enterprise operations, especially in industries like manufacturing, finance, and distribution. Their work often involves integrating legacy systems with modern technologies, troubleshooting existing code, and ensuring systems are efficient and secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IBM RPG Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IBM RPG Developer, you need strong programming skills in RPG (Report Program Generator), familiarity with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and experience with business application development. Expertise in tools such as IBM Rational Developer for i, DB2 databases, and knowledge of CL programming or SQL is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure robust, efficient software solutions that support critical business operations on legacy IBM platforms.

What are some common challenges faced by IBM RPG developers when maintaining legacy systems?

IBM RPG developers often work with legacy code that has been in use for decades, which can present unique challenges such as limited documentation, outdated coding practices, and integration with newer technologies. Navigating these issues requires strong problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of both RPG and IBM i environments.
